Grandpa Joe Plays the Open

Moby ID: 29833

Description

As Grandpa Joe, your target is complete the Glenlackofeagles course's 18 holes of golf within 72 shots - averaging four on each. This is no typical golf course however - it contains patches of astroturf, which cause the ball to change direction at random, as well as rough patches which slow the ball down. The course is displayed from above, with invisible walls surrounding the screen causing 180-degree rebounds.

Inputting shots is done by inputting a compass direction (such as 'n' or 'sw') and a shot weight in pixels. Everything is calculated in BASIC, a fact apparent from the standard input command.

Trivia

Inspiration

The game may be intended as a satire on plastic football pitches. These were in use around the time of this game's release, and produced some randomised bounces - being prepared for this often gave the home teams who were used to them an advantage. They were banned in England in 1988, and Kick Off 2 players frequently complain about their inclusion within the game.

The course name 'Glenlackofeagles' is a pun on the famed Gleneagles golf course in Scotland, the concept of an 'eagle' as two under par in golf, and the programmer Derek Glen's name.
