Much more than an aftershock, Quake II is a couch-rattling seismic event.

The Quake series is already legendary in the PC gaming world, and Quake 64 gave Nintendo owners their first taste of id Software's monstrous hit. Activision is now giving hungry fans a second helping of first-person pandemonium with Quake II. The visuals are slick, the gameplay is quick, and the enemies are down-right sick.

Even though Quake II does not stray too far from the formula established by its forefathers, it is an engrossing first-person shooter that gives fans of the genre exactly what they're looking for. Since most fans are looking for grotesque special effects and monstrous weaponry, this game has earned a well-deserved Mature rating from the ESRB. Therefore, Quake II has content that is suitable only for persons age 17 or older.

Quake II allows players to choose to play as one of six massive marines, and then turns them loose in a hostile alien environment of 19 perilous levels. An option-rich setup screen appeals to the masses with six Controller configurations. Three difficulty settings level the playing field.

You'll work up the most sweat trying to destroy enemies before you meet your own demise, but secret switches and hidden locations add a cerebral splash to the adrenaline rush action in Quake II. Instead of simply challenging the player to locate an exit portal, each level presents multiple missions like recovering Data Disks and disabling components of alien spaceships.

The graphics in Quake II are much more sophisticated than in Quake 64, especially when powered by the N64 Expansion Pak. Weapon blasts light up hallways as they tear toward their targets, and the environments are convincingly futuristic.

Disgusting enemies will probably give you a scare, but polygonal design and choppy animation make them slightly less threatening than they should be. Similarly, special weapon effects and gore are totally gruesome, but perhaps a bit too pixelated to be completely stomach churning.

While you're launching grenades at Iron Maidens and running from Berserkers, one thing you won't be worried about is play control. The development team at Raster Productions has given Quake II a thorough setup menu that allows players to save preferred settings and Controller configurations. Intuitive gameplay and responsive play control ensure that you'll be thrashing aliens -- not your Controller.

Quake II's single-player campaign is rich enough to keep experienced players busy for a while, but the real replay value in Quake II is found in the four-player competition. There are four multiplayer modes to choose from:

Deathmatch
Frag Teams
Flag Wars
Death Tag

There are ten multiplayer arenas designed specifically for head-to-head gaming. Even though the frame rate noticeably suffers during four-player action, plentiful weapons and twisting battle arenas will keep you playing Quake II long after you've completed the one-player game.

Even though you won't discover major innovations in the design of Quake II, you'll get a beefy dose of everything that makes first-person shooters great. Surprising details like enemies who squeeze off one last round before keeling over and creepy voice samples come together to make Quake II an entrancing game that's fun to play.
