Before John Madden was requested to be the game’s endorser, Trip Hawkins (founder of EA) had two other candidates - quarterback Joe Montana and coach Joe Kapp. Joe Montana declined as he already made a deal with Atari (which never seemingly happened), while Joe Kapp demanded too many royalties EA couldn’t provide.
