While 'Surveyor' loads a track, various tips&tricks are shown.

This is a track view in the Surveyor tool. Each node of interest is indicated with rotating circles and symbols.
thumbnail
If you want you can use a grid view to show the topology.

Surveyor - Quickdrive When you choose to drive a train, you always get a selection of how realistic the controls should be.
thumbnail
Driver - submenu. Instead of editing maps in Surveyor, we can drive some ready-made routes. Here is a German X-mas route using a steam engine.
thumbnail
We start parked in the 'garage', the engine stalls. Prepare the engine for the trip ahead, drive out and 'fill her up'.
thumbnail
Here is the refill station for coal and water.
thumbnail
And we need to hook up with some coaches for the passengers.
thumbnail
Not much one can see forward, from the drivers seat.
thumbnail
The boiler takes a lot of space in steam engines. Diesel/Electric engines have a much better view ahead.
thumbnail
We dropped off the passenger coaches at the station, and moved the engine around them to hook up pulling the train.
thumbnail
We have a single track ahead, so we must wait for an oncoming train. Notice we have two red signs ahead.
thumbnail
Ok, we have orders to start the run, and the passengers are seated. On some routes, the time schedule is important, but not now.
thumbnail
Some are relaxing with a good book...the title escapes me. The tracking camera can be swept through the coaches as well as over the terrain.
thumbnail
On our way. Current speed/speed limit is on top right.
thumbnail
The trick is to stop before we run past the next station. The indicators at mid right show the distance to the next point of interest; i.e. speed limit/sloping/switches/stop sign.
thumbnail
Here a signal changes to red as we pass it.
thumbnail
There are more modern trains on this track as well. This is the end of the route and we are expected to turn back.
