If you know nothing about the story found in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, this game is not the place to start because it glosses over the facts and emotions of the real story. However, if you're looking to pick up your broomstick and take Hogwarts by storm, this title should find its way into your library. It's not groundbreaking and it's not the most engaging experience in the world, but there is something fun about dropping worms into a cauldron and desperately looking for 150 hidden crests. Potter fans shouldn't be disappointed if they're looking to kill a few hours in the house that Dumbledore built.

Again, I like what EA has done here. I think they have put their development team to work and asked for something that is better than The Order of the Phoenix. What EA has delivered is definitely an improvement, but it still needs a lot more work to make it solid. This game is a lot better than many movie licensed games (see Judge Dread for details).

Overall, I can very confidently say that Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is a fun movie tie-in game, and it certainly lives up to what is expected of it. Although it isn’t terribly long or deep, it will give fans of the series some solid gameplay, and it certainly isn’t too challenging for younger fans who might want to play it. The game also has some solid replay value from its multiplayer modes, so if you’re itching to get back into Hogwarts for year 6, then Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is a great vehicle to do so.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a solid movie tie-in game with a few setbacks. While light years beyond the mess that was Order of the Phoenix, it still needs a few tweaks to be considered a great game. As it stands Potter fans who already know the story will be pleased with the way everything has been handled here. The mini-games are enjoyable, the school looks fantastic, and there is enough to keep you busy until the crew returns for the obligatory sequel next year. Half-Blood Prince will suffice fans of the series enough to keep them playing, but anyone outside of Hogwarts fan clubs may want to be cautious before jumping in.

Game Over Online (70 out of 100)

Targeted at the younger audience, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a decent game overall, but it doesn’t live up to the potential and grandeur of the Harry Potter legacy. The mini-games are fun enough to play and will keep you interested for a good while, but the actual storyline can be played through rather quickly. That doesn’t change the fact that Harry Potter fans everywhere are going to want to get their hands on this game, if only because it says Harry Potter on it, despite its mediocrity.

Before playing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, you should first be a huge Harry Potter fan. Second, you should have a high tolerance for backtracking and mini-game repetition. Third, you must be able to enjoy a game that isn't challenging (some players just can't do that). There are tons of trivial, easily-awarded trophies and a bunch of other collectible extras that should appeal to a certain crowd. But for most, this game won't outlast the lifespan of a rental.

While the game was delayed for a few months after the movie was delayed it appears the developers did little to improve on the game and if they did it was not in good shape before the delay. A few issues bring down what could have been a great title and makes this a rent nothing more.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince does not do a good job of following the film, the story is encapsulated by poorly written dialogue, bad voice acting and trite design. The flow of the story is butchered by badly compressed and written cut scenes and when you add it all together you’re best to go and see the film and rent the game if you must.

Game Informer Magazine (6.5 out of 10)

This game is the mother of all collect-a-thons, showering Harry with things to snatch up with almost every step he takes. This aspect is overblown, annoying, and far from entertaining, yet ends up being the primary thing to do. Wand dueling periodically arises, but for whatever reason, Harry's spells are overpowered to the point that most foes can be vanquished with one hit. Quidditch, which has devolved into ring flying, ends up being another unwanted distraction. The enjoyable potion mixing minigame is the only area where this game harnesses any of J.K. Rowling's magic. The remainder of the game, which is largely collecting, delivers an experience akin to getting whacked in the face with the stupefy spell.

Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince is in short a kit with three minigames and hardly contains a story. If you see how well the movies and books are, it's all the more sad to see how little effort EA puts in making the Harry Potter games. Graphically we see improvement but qua depth things remain in enfant-stage. You need to be a huge Harry Potter fan in order to consider buying this game.

PSX Extreme (6.1 out of 10)

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince attempts to provide a nicely paced, diverse adventure that would appeal to all fans of the series, but it never really finds its footing and stumbles halfway to the finish line. The controls are slow and clunky, the technicals are passable but never really shine, the story and progression through the game is erratic, and we think the potion making part will prove frustrating for some of the title’s audience. You still have that goodly assortment of great characters and the quality voice acting, the fact that there isn’t anything particularly bad about the production, and a setting and style that is faithful to the books and movies, but it’s not enough.

Young Harry Potter fans will likely play The Half-Blood Prince and have a good time. The game holds your hand throughout and does a good job at recreating Hogwarts, but anyone with any serious gaming experience will find the whole thing to be too simplistic and at times dull. There's little to no challenge present throughout the entire game, the story only makes sense if you already know the plot and there's a lack of things to do outside of the three main gameplay mechanics. Buy if you're a mega fan, but avoid if you like your games with even a tiny amount of depth.

It's not all bad news though. We can see how Harry Potter fans should get something out of the Half-Blood Prince (in the same way that they probably have out of the other decidedly average Potter games). An impeccably detailed representation of Hogwarts is certainly appealing and some strong voice acting from the likes of Adam Sopp as Harry Potter and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, along with some excellent character likenesses, does bring the Harry Potter Universe to life. If you can turn a blind eye to some of the inconsistencies, such as the horrible caricature of Ginny Weasley and some irritating voice acting from Bellatrix LeStrange's voice-over, then there's no reason at all why you shouldn't enjoy waving your wand and casting spells around Hogwarts in the short term.

Harrys Verwirrungszauber zeigte leider keine allzu lange Wirkung.

The Harry Potter video games should complement the other media, providing gleeful interaction to match the excellent story from the books and the visual splendor of the films. But Half-Blood Prince isn't much fun to play once you've gotten a taste of the few simple activities. The game is ultimately a forgettable experience, pushing players through the same three minigames over and over again, without ever capturing the thrill of being a wizard. The story lacks focus and is difficult to follow, giving players only the faintest motivation to continue on before it finally ends on an emotionless, anticlimactic note. The Half-Blood Prince squanders its impressive license; you're better off reading the book again.

I'd hate to make the easy joke here, but I feel it's so apt, I can't resist: The game should be called "Harry Potter and the Half-Assed Game." Even though Endless Day mode allows you to visit the Hogwarts grounds at your leisure after the primary game finishes, letting you round up the rest of the collectibles and deal with any unfinished dueling or Potions challenges, I felt as though EA delivered only half the game I had hoped for.

Terribly flawed audio, bland visuals, cut scenes that make no sense in the context of the preceding or following gameplay, miserable Quidditch, horrible potion-making and awkward dueling all add up to make this title a train wreck from which you can look away. Harry and Potter and The Half-Blood Prince certainly has cast a spell on me: Stupefy!

The Half-Blood Prince is a game that is too eager to show off all its tricks. After some mild amusement, it quickly becomes apparent that there aren't any more tricks to discover and you get looped into a mish-mash of brief gameplay moments that consist of mini-games. It releases at an unfortunate time when movie-based video games are shedding their stigma for being poorly constructed due to time constraints. The Half-Blood Prince isn't terrible, just average.

All told, Half-Blood Prince is also criminally short, unless you're obsessed with completing all the mini-games to perfection and unlocking the 150 crests (good luck!). Half-Blood Prince is an absolutely joy to control, thanks to the Wiimote, but in almost every other respect, it feels like just another licensed game. I don't know if EA needs to be lifted from the restrictions of the Harry Potter books to produce the epic Harry Potter video game adventure that's been swirling in my head, but now that it's nailed the biggest hurdle, controls, we need an equally impressive game part, too. Maybe next time.
