ZX Spectrum screenshots

The game's title screen
thumbnail
The game configuration screens ask for player 1's name, which in this screen is Moby. If no name is entered for player 2's name the game sets up a computer opponent
thumbnail
With both players names entered the game then asks what controllers are to be used. If the player answers 'Yes - I have a joystick' then the game asks if its a Kempston, Sinclair or a cursor
thumbnail
With no joystick selected player 1 must define their action keys
thumbnail
Oddly, its only after setting up two players, making controller choices and defining the action keys, the game now asks if the player(s) want to design a new circuit
thumbnail
After choosing not to design a new circuit and not to load a player designed circuit the player finally gets to choose from one of the game's race tracks, the first is Brazil, this is the second Estor
thumbnail
A few more questions later, after choosing the computer players skill level and saving (or not saving) the track and we're on the gris waiting for the green light
thumbnail
Probably the shortest race ever. Straight off the grid and there's a crash so it's game over
thumbnail
On the starting grid in Brazil. The scenery is marginally different here
thumbnail
Both cars naturally have the same acceleration and are level up to the first bend when one or other has the advantage of being on the inside
thumbnail
Once past the computer car the player should be able to win with ease
thumbnail
At this point in the short straight the game shows the current lap. It's showing 00 which probably means the players are about to finish lap 1. This is the games only lap counter
thumbnail
About half a second further down the track the game shows the current lap time.
thumbnail
This was a two lap race. This is the end of lap 2. Therefore it is the end of the race
thumbnail
The reward is a short animation where the winner jumps for joy and the loser stamps their feet and says bad words. After this the player is back into the 'Do you want to redraw this track' dialogue
thumbnail
The first action in designing a track is to pick a place to start. The game always starts with a straight piece and used the driving action keys for on-screen navigation
thumbnail
With the first piece placed it's just a case of selecting the next piece from the menu and the game adds it to the track
thumbnail
Placing curves required the player to specify an orientation, clockwise or anti clockwise
thumbnail
This did not take long to construct, three to four minutes at the most.
thumbnail
Now it's possible to race on my own track, terrific!
thumbnail
An entirely unexpected result!
