Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies

New or returning player - it doesn’t really matter. This is Company of Heroes 2 at its best, a standalone that focuses on the series’ core: man and machine duking it out across Europe. Those seeking a narrative will find plenty of stories in the tense battles amid crumbling towns and dark forests, so the campaign isn’t missed at all. There’s no fluff, and while there are lots of maps and loadouts to consider, one can still jump into an entertaining, dramatic battle right off the bat.

„The Western Front Armies“ erfindet das „Company of Heroes“-Rad sicherlich nicht neu. Trotzdem ist die Erweiterung für Fans der tiefgründigen Mehrspielerduelle ein Pflichtkauf. Die neuen Fraktionen wurden mit größter Detailverliebtheit umgesetzt, und zusätzliche Inhalte wie das nette Fortschrittssystem und neue Kommandeure runden das Komplettpaket ab. Zu schade jedoch, dass „The Western Front Armies“ kaum echte Einzelspieler-Inhalte bietet. Das hätte dem Kriegsepos noch einmal den letzten Schliff verpasst!

Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies skimps too much on red meat, and results in a game that is impenetrable for players with no previous CoH2 experience. If you’re an established fan, or if you have a friend with the base game and you want to play with them for cheap, WFA is a good fit. But if you’re thinking of buying it as a first taste of the franchise, that first taste is going to be sour.

While more varied victory conditions beyond capture points and annihilation would be welcome, you soon forget that there is no over-arching story as you're busy writing stories of your own. As a map and factions pack, The Western Front Armies brings quality offerings of both, but perhaps more importantly for the longer term health of the franchise it'll also bring with it an influx of new players. It may lack an ambitious single-player campaign but this value for money proposition serves to highlight that sometimes less really can be more.

How much you get out of this standalone expansion will depend entirely on how much you enjoy playing Real Time Tactics games online, against other people. Without a campaign mode it’s just you and your army versus the other players online. Personally I don’t really enjoy playing RTS games online, as I’m not always fast enough to figure out what the enemy is doing, but don’t let that deter you. When the game is working (and read up on that if you’re looking to buy, as the original game has had its issues.) it’s a solid experience.
