Tom
Description official description
Tom is a scrolling platform game where you take the role of Tom as he explores the Tomb of Pharaoh Manilo for fabulous wealth. As you explore the Tomb, you will encounter various creatures as well as traps that include spikes and floors that disappear when walked on. If you touch a creature, trap or fall from a certain height then you lose one of five lives. Blocking certain routes are doors that require keys to be found and used on them. Ladders can be used to move up or down to other platforms and floors of the Tomb. As well as the having the ability to jump, you also have the ability to run.

The Good
The entire game is just one level, but that is deceiving, as the playfield is enormous! it's divided into sections by doors, each require a key to be found. The doors also act as checkpoints. You have a lot of work to between each door: the treasure is scattered around, all kind of funky (and sometimes disturbingly weird) creatures guard the tomb, traps to be avoided, and jumping pads, ladders, and slopes to use. A platformer game of this magnitude in just 16 kilobytes is a great achievement.
One can compliment the details. The graphics are nice in their blockiness, and the color usage is warm and comforting, but at the same time, the chambers look dark and foreboding. Regarding the limitations of the machine, the sprites and scrolling work well enough to not to get in the way. It satisfies me to see 8-way scrolling implemented, nothing interrupts your adventure (unless you get hurt). The music is not very good, but it cuts off before long, and then the sound effects take over. The jumping sound is so overkill that it's funny. The music returns time to time before things would get monotonous.
The Bad
The checkpoints are far away from each other, and when you make a mistake, you are sent way back to do everything again. But hey, it's a fair challenge!
The controls are not perfect, it takes a little to get used to it. For one, you have to hold the Fire Button to keep walking at normal speed, else you walk slowly.
The Bottom Line
Software support for the C16 was pretty lack-luster. Game developers tended to handle it like the retarded little sibling of the C64, in case they bothered with it at all. This game far surpassed what was released for the platform back in the day. It's even better than its original C64 version, a much more streamlined and polished rework.
All in all, it's a well made and challenging game that offers a lot to explore, for the system, and even on its own.
