Super Bespario
Description
Super Bespario is a short clone of Super Mario Bros. made for the Belgian TV program De ideale wereld ('The Ideal World'). It mocks the 2014 government policy statement of Flemish minister president Geert Bourgeois where several political opposition parties denounced the proposed cuts in several domains. Hence the title 'Bespario', a portmanteau of 'Mario' and 'besparen' (the Dutch verb 'to cut back').
Players control Geert Bourgeois through a short level. He is able to collect coins, jump on opponents to defeat them and can grab power-ups such as the growth mushroom after being hit once or the invincibility star. Several messages appear for the enemies tailored to the game's context, such as angry students or a union representative. The game cannot be finished as it ends with a jump over an impossibly large gap. This final jumps represents Bourgeois' plan to skip an index revision, based on the economic system used in Belgium where wages are altered based on an index of basic consumer goods. The game has a chiptune rendition of De Vlaamse Leeuw, the official hymn of the Flemish society and often used at conventions by the Flemish nationalist party NVA Bourgeois is part of.
