Shoot the birds in a game that gets more difficult over time

The Good
Flying Feathers is another simple game from the early Eighties in which you control a gamekeeper who must prevent a flock of birds from stealing his fish. This is done by moving the crosshair over a bird with the joystick or keyboard and firing. I like how the gamekeeper changes direction to reflect where you put the crosshair on the screen. For every 5,000 points, ducks appear and swim across the screen, and the difficulty is ramped up. If you want to experience this increased difficulty straight away, you can select it from the title screen. It is alright to let the fish succumb to the birds, but once five have been nabbed, the game is over.

The animation of the birds flying down is good. In early difficulty levels, they take a long time to reach the water, but they reach it quite quickly on later ones. The backdrop of the meadow is drawn nicely and is reminiscent of a landscape painting. The only thing that stands out from it is the slow movement of the clouds. Sound-wise, your gun’s shooting sound is appropriate and I enjoyed listening to the tune on the title screen; it is easy-listening music at its best.

The Bad
I didn’t like the screeching sound as the ducks make their way across the water. A couple of “quack” sounds would have been nice.

The Bottom Line
Flying Feathers is a simple game where the aim is to shoot down as many birds as you can before they steal your fish. Difficulty is increased from time to time, although you can choose to have this increased difficulty from the title screen. The graphics look good and the game boasts great animations as well. If you enjoy shooting games, then this game is worth a try.
