Quintic Warrior

Moby ID: 70145

Description

A holocaust has nearly wiped out mankind and the few survivors live together in a Space Dome protected by Quintic Warriors who as well as having intelligence, strength, tenacity and intuition, have the Quintic Factor. This gives a few people a fifth attribute which gives them a supreme fighting ability as well as cunning and survival instinct. You are one such person who has the factor and you are on patrol around the dome looking for any threat in your spacecraft. Out of the blue, Zorinian Mutants have started to attack the dome by slowly marching in various rows towards it. As you blast and destroy the mutants you realise that the main defences of the dome have gone haywire and are actually aiming their fire towards you. To make matters worse, a Zed Ramer has been brought along to aid the destruction of the dome and the people inside.

Quintic Warrior is a top view single screen shooter and you control your spacecraft in multiple directions blasting the mutants who move slowly up the screen in various rows over various levels. As you blast the mutants, you must avoid the fire of the dome's defences which are three guns on the sides and the bottom of the screen and they keep firing lasers at you but will only destroy you where all three lasers meet. If you are destroyed then you lose one of three lives but if any mutant reaches the top of the screen then it is game over. A Zed Rammer makes an appearance during a level and this moves down the side of the screen firing across the screen. Once all mutants are destroyed then you move to the next level and the starting level can be selected at the start of the game (0-21).

Use the Quintic Force, Luke!

The Good
Space shooters were quite popular back in the day; and among these was Quintic Warrior, a game similar to Gridrunner, released only for the Commodore 64. Not much to say about the plot, but basically you are given the “Quintic Factor” as well as four other attributes that give you supreme fighting power. This is put to the test when Zorinian Mutants try to attack the dome by marching toward it. If one of them reaches the top of the dome, the game is over regardless of how many lives you have left.

Like Gridrunner, you also need to be aware of your surroundings. Three defenses located on the edges of the screen destroy you when they align with your ship. If you manage to progress through each level, the Zed Ramer also appears and aids in the destruction of the dome.

The graphics are very good, with you fighting the Zorinians against a moving grid of dots, and you use these dots to align your ship with them so that you can get a clear shot. The three defenses are well designed. The sound is also good, and the skill level is selectable before the game, with each level presenting increased difficulty.

The Bad
The game is so difficult that I could not get past the first level. Because I have to keep moving around to avoid getting intersected and killed, this makes it difficult for me to get a clear shot. Furthermore, when you end up losing a life you respawn in the grid’s center, but the defenses are still homed in on you. Due to this, you are killed instantly if you don’t get out of the way.

The Bottom Line
Quintic Warrior is right up there with the aforementioned Jeff Minter game when it comes to gameplay. Players new to the game may be put off by its difficulty, but with a little practice the game can be mastered in no time.
