Description

Mangrove is a single screen game where you have to protect healthy cells from cancer cells in the Mangrove Swamps while trying to create more. You start with 30 cells in the middle of the screen and from the edges appear the cancer cells, and with a sight you move it around the scren hitting the cancer cells to remove them. If a healthy cell is touched from a cancer cell then it disappears and because healthy cells have to be touching four others then any cells touching less than four disappear also. As you move the sight around the screen you create healthy cells but you only have a short time to get them to touch four cells or they disappear. You are armed with gamma radiation and when used destroys any cancer cells on the screen but you only have four but you do receive more after a certain score. If there are less than twelve healthy cells on the screen then it is game over.

Keep those cells up!

The Good
I like that Mangrove starts off easy so that new players can get used to the game. After a while, its increasing speed puts players on edge as they scramble to keep at least 12 cells on edge. The graphics are clear; you can tell that the cancerous cells look sinister right away. There are not much sound effects, but the most notable one is when the game changes its background border.

The Bad
The game lacks a title screen, as well as in-game instructions and high scores.

The Bottom Line
As I said, Mangrove is a fast-paced game in which you control a crosshair that leaves a trail of cells behind, and these cells must join up with a group of existing cells to ensure their survival. Move the crosshair over the cancerous cells to stop them from harming existing cells. The game lets you know that the cells that you leave behind in the trail has disappeared, by changing the background border. This initially happens every two seconds. However, as you progress through the game, the cells disappear at a much faster rate.

Both the keyboard and joystick is supported, and the only things missing from the game is a decent title screen and instructions. Not my cup of tea, but I am sure that someone who enjoys Life will have no problems with the game.
