Devil's Attorney
Description official description
Devil's Attorney is a turn-based strategy game set in the 1980s. The player controls the defense attorney Max McMann who works from a run-down law office. In three parts, each representing a different neighbourhood, he needs to win cases to earn money, represent increasingly wealthier clients and improve his personal situation. There are 58 cases in total and the game offers three difficulty levels.
Cases are played out as a turn-based game in the courtroom. Max and his client are on the left, the prosecutor, witnesses and evidence is on the right. 'Health' is shown through a number of points in a 'guilty meter'. To win a case, the prosecutor, witnesses and evidence need to be removed before all 'health' gone so they can no longer damage the client. Each witness has an amount of health represented through a number and it is also shown how much damage is done per turn. Their damage can be modified through evidence and the prosecutor, but this also works the other way around: if there are no more witnesses, the prosecutor is gone too. Each turn Max has a number of action points to attack the prosecutor, witnesses or evidence. With actions such as 'Patronize', 'Interrogate' and 'Cross-Examine' he can attack directly. Other 'weapons' are 'Mesmerize' to reduce incoming damage, tampering with evidence and for instance an 'Ego Boost' to improve the damage output. Evidence often requires separate attacks to damage it, such as 'Expert Analysis'. Each action consumes a different amount of action points.
When a case is won some money is provided. It can be used to upgrade Max' law office, through new furniture and other elements. This affects three sets of abilities (Decadence, Materialism and Vanity) that act as a skill tree to unlock new attacks, bonuses and mechanisms to use during cases. A bonus with cosmetic items is provided for winning cases quickly.
