The classic platformer returns to console glory!

Fifteen years after taking the NES by force, Alex and Ryan return to bust skulls on River City Ransom EX for the Game Boy Advance. Publisher Atlus has kept the terrific gameplay of this classic side-scrolling fighter but added tons new features.

As in the original River City Ransom, Slick, River City's top gang lord, takes over the high school and holds the students hostage. Alex and Ryan, however, weren't at school that day. (Kids: This is only a video game. Don't play hooky, unless you know a crime lord is going to take over your school.) Playing as Alex, with Ryan as your wingman, you take on Slick's street gangs and fight you way to the school to save the students and Ryan's girlfriend.

No gameplay elements got lost in translation from the NES to the Game Boy Advance. The gangs still bring the tires, chains and brass knuckles into battle, and when you knock out the bad guys, they interject classic musings such as "Barf," "Blarg," "Bogus" and "I'm wasted." The attack moves are the same, the game shows you your stats and you still spend your money at the mall to power yourself up, RPG-style.

If that were all, River City Ransom EX would be a welcome addition to the GBA library. But Atlus has really gone to town with customization and other enhancements. In story mode, you can Ryan's AI, from how he handles weapons to how aggressive he is.

And if you like to go crazy with tweaking game options, you might want to call the doctor ahead of time because you're going to get sick. Adjust the number of enemies, difficulty level (easy to crazy), game speed, obstacles, techniques, even gravity. A new fight log keeps very detailed stats of your character. And with a Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable, you can play with or against a friend.

According to Atlus, the final version of River City Ransom EX will allow you to gather clues and give you the option to make or break friendships. You'll also be able to exchange characters and data from one Game Boy Advance to another.

Bottom Line

River City Ransom EX should prompt more developers to not just re-release but also revamp their classics for a new generation of gamers. River City Ransom EX should be a big hit -- and that's not "Bogus," dude!

It’s up to our heroes to save poor Cyndi and free River City from the clutches of Slick and his underlings. You can play as Alex and take on the challenge alone or battle as Alex and Ryan simultaneously in a two player Download Play game. Kick and punch to fight your way through gang members, evil bosses, and other goons. Or use a variety of weapons ranging from a chain whip, brass knuckles, and a tire, to name a few. Raise your stats by eating right, and gain new techniques by reading books. With your fighting prowess and never-ending spirit, the bad guys won’t know what hit them
