Description

Wild Frontera is a top-down action shooter with twin stick controls and a western-fantasy theme. It starts in 1887 in a frontier settlement. The protagonist was once a Marshall, but then turned to gold and farming. The gold rush passed and a harsh winter decimated his cattle, so he decides to catch the thief SteelNuggers to get the reward money.

The game consist of eight stages that take place in a very large environment with towns, mines, farms, grasslands, deserts, fields and forests. The main story mode can be played cooperatively with up to four players, both offline and online, and optionally a free roam mode can be activated to explore without the stages. Each stage is split up in smaller parts divided by checkpoints and an unlimited amount of continues. In the regular story mode the character progresses along a linear path, dodging bullets and taking down enemies until the next checkpoint is reached or a boss is defeated. Enemies consist largely of outlaws, but there are also animals such as wolves and chickens, as well as ghosts and skeletons. Other enemies are tesla coils, zeppelins and turrets. There are seventeen bosses in total.

As is typical for a twin stick shooter, the movement and shooting direction are independent from each other. The character starts with a simple revolver that has an unlimited amount of bullets, but requires reloading. After collecting gold and locating hidden chests and robbing vaults, a merchant can be visited. He offers new types of weapons such as single-shot rifles with a guiding line and shotguns. They have different statistics for range, damage and reload time, and sometimes unique elements such as a scope or the ability to pierce armour. Only a single weapon can be equipped at all times, but it can be swapped when the merchant is visited again. Gold can also be used to update the character statistics run speed, stamina and first aid (health) up to ten times. Other movement options are rolling (depletes a stamina meter), a melee attack and dropping bombs.

Weapons are procedurally generated for each session. More points are provided for keeping combos going, including shooting bottles and other elements in the scenery. Sometimes it is possible to save a damsel in distress and every now and then a health pick-up can be found, as the character only has three hearts (lives) at the start. There are multiple difficulty levels and online leaderboards. For the multiplayer mode almost every game option can be customized, with exotic options such as alternative gravity settings, big heads and different bullet kinetics.
