Castle of the Winds

The Good
Everything. Especially the replay value. The completely randomized maps and item drops, the different styles of monsters. Like diablo (original) you get subtle differences in the quests and groupings of enemies on different playthroughs. Despite having the latest Xbox games, etc. I started playing this game as a little girl, and I still play this game on a regular basis almost twenty years later. It's so much better than the silly mobile games on my phone or laptop and yet it has miniscule resource cost to run. It also is actually difficult on the hard settings. The art is, in today's world, ancient - but it is very cohesive within the game. There is nothing that jarrs you out of gameplay.

The Bad
Unfortunately the fact that it won't run on 64-bit systems unless we can get a recompile from the developer!

The Bottom Line
Immersive, entertaining, creative, and still exciting after nearly twenty years of playing this game.

The Good
I have played this game about 100 times or more since it first arrived. It is a simple but well working RPG - the type that lead to later games like Asherton's Call & Diablo. Castle of the winds was freeware & Castle of the Winds originally was payware, but is now also free for download. The original Castle isn't nearly as good as the sequel, but gives you an introduction into how to play the game.

The Bad
No real ending for Castle 1 - never knew if I was finished. Castle 2 is better, and has a definate ending.

The Bottom Line
Older game simple graphics, but can be played & enjoyed over & over - what more can you want for free?!

There were a lot of magic spells, and weapons. There are a lot of monsters and the graphics are good for a rogue-like.

There wasn't any sound.

You are a little man or woman and you go around slaying dragons and picking up various items.
