Chameleon Twist 2

Moby ID: 8508

Sunsoft's sweet-natured Pak delivers loads of yummy fun.

CT 2 clearly aspires to shoulder the Mario mantle of endearing main characters, bright graphics and fairly benign troublemakers. CT 2's lumbering ladybugs aren't going to remind anyone of Quake's monsters.

The chameleons' abilities appear to be much the same as in CT 1. The main tool is the prehensile tongue, which can be used to snare enemies at long range, vault up a cliff, and wrap around a pole to launch your chameleon over big gaps. Solving CT 2's puzzles usually calls for a bit of tongue work.

CT 2 sports six sprawling low-danger zones:

Sky Land
Carnival Land
Ice Land
Great Edo Land (a nod to developer Japan Supply System's home country) Toy Land
Pyramid Land

Sky Land's action transpires in the clouds, but your chameleon must keep feet on solid ground in order to clear the fog bank at world's end. The pastel fiesta of Carnival Land looks like it was dreamed up by an especially sunny Walt Disney while Ice Land bears more than a passing resemblance to Super Mario 64's Cool, Cool Mountain.

CT 1's top-hatted rabbit returns, this time to give your chameleon enticing tips before whisking off on his magic carpet. Developer Japan System Supply has wisely dumped CT 1's bizarre battle mode, in which chameleons jockeyed to push each other off platforms suspended in space. We doubt many players will lament the loss of that multiplayer weirdness. More problematic, though, are the restrictions on camera movements.

You can zoom in and out, but pan only slightly to the left or right. Given that much of the game play involves lining up your chameleon just right to make tricky moves, these limits could be quite frustrating to the younger players who are the game's primary audience.

On the plus side, a luminous palette helps CT 2 looks much better than its predecessor. Three training areas help players master the tricky tongue-action. If they don't lose patience with the camera restrictions, younger players should have a pleasant, unpretentious action game on their little hands.
