Se cercate una sfida old-school, appagante ed estremamente impegnativa, questo Redux fa senza ombra di dubbio al caso vostro. Forse il titolo di KTX Software e Hucast non avrà i valori produttivi tipici del tripla A moderno, ma nella sua semplicità sa divertire con un gameplay semplice e genuino, di quelli che al giorno d'oggi sono merce rara. Il risultato finale però non è privo di difetti, alcuni dei quali anche piuttosto grossolani ed evitabili: ci sono indecisioni e scelte discutibili a livello di design. Per fortuna, queste non intaccano in modo eccessivo il genuino senso di divertimento che il titolo è in grado di regalare al giocatore.

Conclusively, Redux: Dark Matters is an unforgiving arcade shooter which demands dedication from the player. With no tutorial or no indication of what is a friendly pick-up and what is an enemy ball of death, every scenario and stage is a mountain to climb with no climbing gear. When this learning curve is scaled, however, the player will quickly begin to understand what Redux is all about; the fast and furious sci-fi action which owes its heritage to Sega and the consoles its responsible for. The levels are well designed and interesting to see with enemies that are individual to each stage in both the way they actually look and the challenge they pose. It’s nice to see Dreamcast getting some love after so long but for the modern gamer who may have not owned the console, Redux: Dark matters may come across as just another arcade title that has made its way onto Steam with no real recognition for what it represents or how fun it actually is.

Se siete alla ricerca di uno sparatutto vecchio stile in grado di soddisfare il vostro desiderio di retrogaming moderno, Redux: Dark Matters farà al caso vostro. Non si tratta certo di un prodotto raffinato come Ikaruga, o leggendario come R-Type, Gradius o Thunderforce, ma nonostante questo è comunque in grado di tenere incollati allo schermo per alcune ore.

Redux: Dark Matters è un titolo da prendere in considerazione se proprio siete innamorati di R-Type e se cercate uno shoot ‘em up vecchio stile ma con qualcosa di più al passo con i tempi. Il problema del gioco è che non eccelle in nessun comparto, proponendo meccaniche di gioco solide ma prive di spunti particolari e un level design senza grandi innovazioni. Verrebbe quasi da definirlo un gioco di routine, con tutte le sue cose al punto giusto (bella ad esempio la colonna sonora), ma anche con il sapore di una minestra un po’ riscaldata. Si mangia senza problemi, ma le cose buone sono altre.

Per tante piccole pecche, Redux non mi ha convinto, specie considerando che su Steam ci sono esponenti del genere ben più interessanti e stilisticamente riusciti, Astebreed su tutti. Viene spontaneo chiedersi se il successo della campagna Kickstarter non sia dovuto alla particolare genesi del suo precursore, nato tra le grida di gioia dei fanboy SEGA più irriducibili (gruppaccio nel quale faccio parte, sia chiaro). Tuttavia, non basta sviluppare un titolo insipido su una macchina storica per assicurarsi di base lo stato di cult. WaterMelon con Pier Solar e il prossimo, attesissimo, Project Y su Mega Drive insegnano che si può fare faville su hardware obsoleti, riuscendo comunque a sfornare titoli vincenti senza puntare sul fattore nostalgia. Sturmwind rimane su un livello completamente diverso; peccato, speriamo in meglio con Ghost Blade.

While the likes of Super Stardust and Resogun have done a lot to renew interest in shooters, classic automatic scrollers are in very, very short supply. Redux: Dark Matters is not an exemplary shoot-em-up, but it is a rather a safe and well-executed one where fans of the genre can get an immediate sense of its influences. And players will admire its adherence to traditional shoot-em-up elements, from the familiar stage flow to the charge-up attack.

Even among the Dreamcast’s celebrated library of shooters, Dark Matters was hardly admired beyond collector appeal, as it never offered quality to match its value. As a standard-priced Steam release, however, this version of the game is at least more practical and playable to the wider audience. Redux draws upon shooters from the ‘90s, but at the end of the day it feels like a shell of its inspiration, clearly lacking the same thoughtful and intuitive design. Redux: Dark Matters on Steam isn’t worth getting excited about given the wealth of better alternatives, and even if you’re a Dreamcast collector, there are far better shooter releases for it in recent years. At the very least, though, grab the beautiful soundtrack if you’re into sci-fi synth.

Redux: Dark Matters sembra l'opera di appassionati che hanno giocato una miriade di shump, ma non ne hanno mai studiato a fondo le meccaniche. Se così non fosse avrebbero curato maggiormente gli schemi di attacco dei nemici, avrebbero creato un po' più di varietà e invece di pensare a due livelli di difficoltà che sono praticamente due giochi diversi, entrambi fallati, ne avrebbero progettato uno solo, ma funzionante. Così com'è Redux: Dark Matters può essere appetibile solo per i super fan del genere, anche se a dire la variate l'offerta di shump su PC ormai è talmente vasta e variegata che non si capisce perché si dovrebbero spendere soldi su un titolo così mediocre.
