Atari 2600Tilt (Jan, 1984)
Graphisme remarquable, simulation parfaite. Décathlon va sûrement très vite s'imposer. Fabuleux !
This is a wonderful sports simulation from the opening Olympic theme where your man runs with the torch, to the bleachers and lights in the stadium. In some ways it's better than actual physical activity in that you don't have to buy $75 jogging shoes, don't have to buy tickets and don't have to worry about political boycotts. My only complaint is that it is awfully tiring to jiggle the joystick constantly but I guess with diligent training, that too can be overcome.
Atari 2600TeleMatch (Nov, 1983)
Atari 2600The Atari Times (Mar 10, 2014)
In spite of the controls requiring a lot of effort and strength, as well as the lack of sounds, The Activision Decathlon is a very fun and enjoyable game. It's truly an Olympic quality game.
Atari 2600Woodgrain Wonderland (Dec 04, 2016)
The Activision Decathlon – with events including the 100-metre dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-metre race, 110-metre hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and – the granddaddy of all your pain – the 1500-metre race – is a brutal game regardless of the controller you’re using. It is also one of the all-time best sports games for the 2600.
Commodore 64Your Commodore (Nov, 1984)
It all goes to make a game that is difficult not to enjoy although may seem a little sedate at first.
Commodore 64Computer and Video Games (CVG) (Oct, 1984)
If you want a more accurate graphic representation of an athletic event with realistic movement, then go for Activision Decathlon.
Atari 2600All Game Guide (1998)
A fun, but tiring game. Even better if you are playing against a friend or three.
Atari 2600Digital Press - Classic Video Games (Sep 26, 2004)
I find it rather amusing people actually oppose the death penalty, claiming it to be cruel and unusual punishment. Let me tell you people this: you don't know what cruelty really is. Ask a death row inmate if he would rather get a lethal injection or play "Decathlon" for two hours. I'll guarantee he won't pick the latter.
Commodore 64Zzap! (Jun, 1987)
Simplistic joystick-waggling gives instant pleasure. Although the action is repetitive, it's timeless nature brings you back for more. The cheapest and best joystick-waggling sports simulation available.
Atari 2600Atari HQ (2000)
My biggest complaint with Decathlon is that you're going to wear out your joysticks very quickly. The best way to preserve your sticks is to try and pick up some 2600 Track and Field controllers (it's just a panel with a few buttons, just like in the arcade game.) In addition, after playing this game, you're really going to FEEL like you've had a grueling workout... especially in your forearms and biceps. While I personally wouldn't have minded if Activision left out the repetitious and tiresome distance races, I guess they couldn't really have kept them out of the game or else it wouldn't be Decathlon. Either way, for quick adrenaline rush or for multiplayer fun, Decathlon fits the bill nicely.
Atari 2600The Video Game Critic (Feb 07, 2002)
Overall, Decathlon is a fine choice for some spirited multi-player action. It's the only Atari 2600 game that's ever made me break into a sweat!
Commodore 64Micro 7 (Nov, 1984)
ColecoVisionAll Game Guide (1998)
Younger gamers may enjoy The Activision Decathlon because of its hyperactive joystick maneuvering and potential for heated two-player races. However, I do not care much for the game. I guess I am too old or have better things to do than sit around, jerking my joystick.
Atari 5200The Video Game Critic (Jun 18, 2011)
The athletes are nicely detailed and fluidly animated, but it looks funny how their upper bodies remain perfectly still while running. Decathlon's audio is so quiet that my friend Scott likened this game to "performing athletic feats in a funeral home". Activision could have probably done more with it, but Decathlon provides some much-needed multi-player action for the system.
MSXTilt (Jul, 1985)
