Description
Company of Heroes 2 keeps the gameplay very similar to that of its predecessors. You are focusing more on placing your infantry to a proper cover than just clicking to attack enemy units. Instead, they do it all automatically, if fired upon they will lay down and proceed slowly, if well covered, they will take out open enemy with an ease while gaining experience and becoming more elite. Each unit type also has special abilities that can be called upon. Certain infantry may be forced to run even when in the open, elite infantry may have grenades or molotovs, and so on. Depending on the infantry type, be that grenadiers, shock troopers, fresh recruits, snipers or engineers. On each mission you are limited as to how much infantry you can have, and as you reclaim certain key points, you'll be able to command more troops. Same applies to vehicles, with exception that they will also require certain amount of fuel to be requested. Certain actions like artillery barrage may require additional ammunition in order to be executed. As you have your base and strategic key points, your ammo and fuel will slowly increase. To make them increase even further, you can build fuel depot or ammo stash on your key locations.Certain missions will provide you with special abilities such as calling air strikes or letting your infantry locate enemy tanks more easily. Depending on the ability, they may require ammo or fuel, and will require certain amount of time before they can be activated again. In Company of Heroes 2, campaign story focuses on the eastern front where you play missions from German invasion of Russia to conquest of Berlin through storytelling flashbacks of the main protagonist. Besides the campaign, there is theater of war which consists of single-player and co-op missions where player can select either Soviet or German side.
Focusing on the eastern front where one of the harshest enemies were cold winters, units can die from cold and frost bites during winter storm or low below zero temperatures, so you will have to keep them moving or find a house or a fireplace to save them. Game also features Order 227 issued by Joseph Stalin which prohibits retreating from the battlefield during the duration of time. If your soldiers retreat, NKVD commissar will gun them down.
