Music is standard and graphics are cute but basic, just about right for an arcade title of the time. While Namco generally played things safe with many sequels, it’s refreshing to see them try something different with this sequel and succeed. Easily suggested for arcade heads.

The new island settings are interesting for awhile, but 72 levels worth is slight overkill. The strategy involved with avoiding enemies while trying to take off chunks of the island is interesting, but almost feels too involved for a game as simple as Dig Dug; especially when you still have the option to blow up your enemies, like in the first game. Not bad, but I’d recommend the original tried and true Dig Dug before this one.
NESVideo Game Den (2009)
It is definitively not the straightforward gameplay offered by the first game and this might explain why Dig Dug II wasn't as popular as the original. However you will get the hang of it very quickly and the game will reveal astonishing fun in return.
ArcadeAll Game Guide (1998)
Perhaps a better plan for Dig Dug II would have been to add a few more characters or weapons. Changing the view, the graphics, and the entire concept was not the way to go.

I can certainly appreciate how its sharp graphics and excellent music stay true to the original, but frankly, this game is not very fun. Much of the blame lies with the awful controls. My friend Steve was so unimpressed that he asked me if this was some sort of "bootleg" game! Without an ounce of the magic of the original, Dig Dug 2 has largely faded into obscurity.
