Japanese action RPGs had existed for almost ten years before - but was there any Western one?

This comes to mind. Misses action as genre, though it's mentioned in the description. And look who made a minor revision to it two years ago :)

Wow, totally forgot that one. Can someone confirm if it's indeed action and not just a real-time game, i.e. it's not just fast turns without pause?

PS: And according to the game browser on here, the earliest games listed as action RPGs are The Caverns of Freitag and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Cartridge, both listed as 1982.

Thanks for the link! That's a great article - though most of the games he mentioned don't really qualify for what I was looking for. That said, I completely forgot Faery Tale Adventure...

You can tell Caverns of Freitag is action-based because I actually enjoyed making those screenshots. :o)
