Still, like slipping on an organic fairtrade banana peel, Super Monkey Ball is really just tripping on a good thing. The core gameplay is great: the stages are challenging, the controls (once you become acquainted with the sensitivity) are intuitive, and visually it's quite impressive. It's one of the best iPhone games at launch, but expect to exert a lot of effort to unlock every bit of sweetness.

Super Monkey Ball beweist vielerlei.

Super Monkey Ball is all about the racing, the core component of the game's GameCube predecessor. But the mini-games and multiplayer games that make the GameCube game fun when you're having a party are all absent--something for Sega to work on for the next installment, for sure.

The only lesson I learned from Super Monkey Ball is how to deal with anger and frustration. Unless I just sat there on a menu screen listening to the game. The tilting control issues in this iPhone/iPod Touch game ruined the experience for me. Please avoid this game. The sequel plays much better - or so I have been told.

It's still not bad, though. At GBP 5.99, there's quite a lot of gameplay here, and while there's a fair amount of frustration to endure, the game's better moments - navigating a perilous series of platforms and traps, or taking advantage of some subtly placed platforms to shortcut huge sections of a level and complete it in seconds - are in decent supply. Otherwise, this is a good advert for the system's graphics hardware and tilt sensor, but the latter proves to be so effective that it seals the game's fate rather than propelling it to a high score.

Super Monkey Ball fights you every step of the way during that critical first impression. The tilt controls are sloppy -- precision is a precious commodity in AiAi's jungle. It's too bad, because the production values and amount of content in here are solid. Your $10 only buys you a ball of frustration. Avoid it.
