Marvel: Ultimate Alliance successfully integrates Marvel’s cast of characters with Vicarious Visions’ established gameplay engine. The game includes tons of gameplay, a plethora of Marvel characters, a great presentation, and successfully balances the action and RPG elements, while letting players choose just how much they want to micromanage. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance has something for everyone: Marvel fans, those looking for an easygoing blast-a-thon, and even more RPG-centric action RPG fans. The game works very well on the Wii and provides a good display of the system’s controls.

Viewed with a top-down perspective, MUA looks pretty muddy and pixilated on the Wii. I’m no graphics whore by any means, but sometimes the game looks downright ugly compared to the 360 version. Despite this, everything is well-designed, and there is a huge variety in environments. You’ll travel to circuses, rooftops, outer space, and a castle in your quest to topple Dr. Doom.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a fast-paced, fun experience that balances a repetitive, beat’em-up arcade style with arcing and involving storylines that will appeal to platforming and RPG fans alike. While basic knowledge of the Marvel universe is recommended (the game includes many nods to hardcore comic book followers), it is not necessary to be captivated by the large cast of characters. Recommended to fans of the Action-RPG genre and for those who do not already own the Xbox 360 and PS3 releases. For others, rent it to be safe.

The Wii control scheme fits this game very well, and when coupled with a good story and incredible cast, the result is a game that is very entertaining. If you are a Marvel fan, you will want this game. If you are a fan of the type of games like X-Men: Legends, or Gauntlet, you will want this game. If you are a fan of entertaining, team-based games, you will likely want this game. It is a lot of fun and is appropriate for younger and older players and will provide a lot of entertainment.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance is certainly worth picking up. With an adequate campaign and more playable comic book characters than you can shake a stick at, plus bonus side missions for all of them, you’re definitely getting more than what you paid for. Along with well-executed team play and a campy-yet-passable story, you’ll really feel like you and your friends have control of all your favorite heroes.

Control complaints aside, though, Alliance is an undoubtedly a triumph in most ways. The immense stable of heroes and villains, stylish environments, depth of customization, and superb storyline will keep you entertained for a long time; there is easily 20 hours of dungeon crawling going on here. Do everyone a favor, though, and be sure that your forearms are up to the task.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was a very good game on other systems, and it's still plenty of fun on the Nintendo Wii. It's a satisfyingly lengthy game, with loads of missions to complete and a huge assortment of comic book-inspired side missions to bring you a little more insight into the backgrounds of the game's leading characters. Be aware that you'll encounter a few glitches and snags along the way, like the occasional frame-rate hitch, some awkward jumping animations, and there's also a very confusing character progression interface that makes it way too easy to accidentally sell off a valuable trinket. Despite its flaws, gamers will have plenty of fun playing Marvel: Ultimate Alliance on the Wii. Most importantly, you won't miss your clunky old gamepad and can just concentrate on having fun.
GameSpot (Nov 21, 2006)
If you can get past the clumsy controls, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a well-made and accessible action RPG. It captures the essence of the Marvel universe, an incredible feat considering the breadth of the source material, though there are just enough omissions to easily justify a sequel. Still, its control problems are fundamental, and they definitely get in the way of what is otherwise a really solid experience.
Nintendo Life (Jul 10, 2009)
Activision's efforts in bringing this title to the Wii and doing as good a job as they did deserve some praise, despite some poor gesture implementation. Marvel comics fans with Wii consoles should definitely buy this game and bask in the glow of nostalgia -- 'nuff said!
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance takes what’s good from X-Men Legends, adds in more Marvel characters and does nothing else. The story itself is rather short, so the bulk of your play may be spent online with other players to find it more enjoyable. Marvel's story mode is almost beatable in a single sitting if you can bare the tedious game play Marvel offers. Small story based missions that are character exclusive add a little more depth to Ultimate Alliance, yet they bring the same tedious gameplay to the table. This RPG is one of the more basic out there for players to sink their teeth into, yet it doesn’t do enough to warrant a $60 purchase for the Xbox 360. A rental will do you nicely, or consider picking it up on the current gen consoles once the price drops. It all looks the same between the PS2, Xbox, and 360 anyway.
Video Game Talk (Apr 02, 2007)
Fans of multiplayer action-adventure RPGs and of the Marvel universe should be pleased with Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. The sheer abundance of entertaining four-member teams that can be assembled is a blast on its own. Combined with great static gameplay and in-depth upgradeability, this deep incarnation from the creators of X-Men Legends is well worth a look. Though the motion controls are a bit strained and ill-conceived on the Wii, that hurdle can be easily crossed without any frustration and shouldn't be a deterrent. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance deserves a meaty Recommendation.
Game Chronicles (Nov 25, 2006)
Most of the enhancements in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance are about quantity and your ability and freedom to choose how to play and who to play with. Gameplay hasn’t really evolved that much from the super-hero games we were playing last year, even with the potential of the innovative Wii remote, but the presentation sure has. So, if you love comics, super-heroes, or just want to experience a fun and challenging action-RPG, Ultimate Alliance delivers the goods. Sure, the levels and even the gameplay get a bit repetitive (and painful) at times, but there is always great action and the potential to share that action with your friends.
eToychest (2006)
If you have the option to invest in one of the other versions, that’s the best route to take. The “novel” controls on the Wii are more gimmicky than fun in this particular title, and absolutely nothing else in the game makes up for the lackluster presentation. There have already been a few titles—such as Madden and Call of Duty—that prove Nintendo’s new plan is a viable one, but Marvel: Ultimate Alliance simply isn’t up to snuff.

Game Revolution (Dec 01, 2006)
Although Marvel: Ultimate Alliance does not change the superhero formula set by X-Men Legends, it does capitalize on it—really working to instill personality in every aspect of the game, from the superheroes’ biographies, to their powers, to the teams, to the neat and varied boss battles. A must for Marvel fans, a good buy for everyone else, Ultimate Alliance is an epic in an old package, kind of like those massy boxes of comics you have hidden away in your attic, gathering ebay value like dust.
NGamer (Feb, 2007)
There isn't anything else like it on the Wii, so it should please anyone looking for a multiplayer action game. However, it can get repetitive over time and the level design feels uninspired.
IGN (Dec 01, 2006)
When it comes to Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for Wii, the real question is exactly how does this game stand up to both current/next generation titles. While it’s definitely a step up from current generation, Ultimate Alliance doesn’t hold up against its next gen. counterparts, and that’s a bit disheartening. The big gamble lies in the controller, and in the end we’d honestly prefer a game like this using very minimal motion control in favor of more accuracy and dependability. [...] The most impressive part of the Marvel universe is its beautiful style and amazing art direction, and if you really want to enjoy the hybrid of living comics and action RPG gameplay, you have to play Ultimate Alliance on either 360 or PS3. As a mindless multiplayer adventure the Wii version does a fine job, but if you’re truly looking to find the superior next gen version of Ultimate Alliance, you’re going to have to go elsewhere.

If you're a fan of the X-Men Legends games that have appeared over the last few years you'll know what to expect from Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, but on the Wii the simple formula has been tinkered with to the detriment of the game. The new gesture controls simply don't work well enough, and in a game that promotes button bashing the constant use of the Wii-mote is more than a little tedious. Ultimate Alliance is one of the best dungeon crawlers of the year, but don't look to the Wii version for that experience.
60 (Dec 19, 2006)
It's wonderful to see a port receive attention to the controller instead of haphazardly tossing the game out there. It's enough to raise the Wii version a step above from the expectations, but it can't be ignored that the core game is mediocre at best. Ultimate Alliance is a dream set up for comic book followers. Everyone else will simply want to play the game without the computer assistance.

Worth Playing (Dec 19, 2006)
The Xbox 360 version of MUA is superior to pretty much every other version. If you have that system, skip this version and get that one. Everyone else, rent before plunking down the cash. Even so, said rental money may be a waste. This game is the absolute antithesis of what you should get to show off the power or the playability of the Wii.
FZ (Jan 05, 2007)
