Christopher Tin is a composer known for his diverse range of music, which encompasses concert and media compositions. Born in California and educated in the United Kingdom, Tin has garnered recognition for his two Grammy-winning compositions and his collaborations with renowned artists across various musical genres.
Tin's music has been described as "rousing" and "anthemic" by Time Magazine, and "joyful" and "intelligent" by The Guardian. His repertoire spans from lush symphonic works to world-music infused choral anthems and electro-acoustic hybrid film and video game scores.
One of Tin's most notable compositions is Baba Yetu, a Swahili setting of The Lord's Prayer. This piece has become a modern choral standard, blending infectious melody and gospel rhythms with intricate modulations and soaring orchestration. Baba Yetu earned Tin the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals and remains one of the best-selling choral octavos for Alfred Publishing.
Tin's music has been performed in prestigious venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Royal Festival Hall, and the Hollywood Bowl. His compositions have been interpreted by esteemed ensembles such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, Metropole Orchestra, and US Navy Band.
In addition to his concert works, Tin has contributed scores to various media projects, including films like Suddenly Seventeen, Tess, Dante's Inferno and Dead Space: Aftermath. He has also composed music for video games such as Sid Meier's Civilization IV (2005), Karateka (2012), Sid Meier's Civilization VI (2016) and Offworld Trading Company (2016). He is the first composer to win a Grammy award for a game music track after releasing it separately.
Tin's academic background includes a Master of Music in Composition and Conducting from the Royal College of Music, where he was a Fulbright Scholar and received the highest overall marks. He also holds a Master of Arts in Humanities with an emphasis on Film Theory from Stanford University, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition and English Literature from Stanford University, where he graduated with honors. Tin also pursued studies in Music Composition and English Literature at the University of Oxford.
