J. R. R. Tolkien was an English writer and university professor best known as the author of the high-fantasy books The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.

Several licensed games have been made since the 1980s based on his work including the text adventure Lord of the Rings by Melbourne House, Electronic Arts' adaptations of the Peter Jackson movies The Two Towers and The Return of the King and strategy games including The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth. A parody, Bored of the Rings was released by CRL in 1985.

Tokien's work has also strongly influenced early table top role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons which in turn influenced the development of RPGs for computers and video game consoles.
