Born on February 13, 1923. Decorated WWII pilot; became the first man to travel faster than the speed of sound, flying a Bell X-1 aircraft; was top Air Force test pilot for nearly ten years; was promoted to Vice Commander of the 17th Air Force; retired in 1975.
