Forsaken 64 (Nintendo 64)

A lotta hype without much to ride on...

The Good
I'm a big fan of the Decent series, a game that put a great twist on the first person action shoot-em up games, and this was a carbon-copy with many of the same elements. The multi-player mode was great, very Bond-esk with the twist of a dual axis, 360-degree playing arena, although the playing fields were a tad small if you had 4 players going.

The Bad
They built this game up like crazy. Tons of ads were running all the time and oddly none of them had much of the actual game in them, but they made it look really cool. If you bought into that, you were probably pretty disappointed when you got it home. It was a Decent carbon-copy with little originality. The only differences being worse handling and terribly monotonous gameplay. It was anything but smooth even when you did get the handling down.

The Bottom Line
An alright game. Kind of like Bond, kind of like Decent. Run of the mill first-person action. Multi-player is a blast. Its worth a look nowadays, since you don't have to pay 50 bucks for it anymore.

North & South (NES)

One of the first strategy games of its kind...

The Good
It's the first game like it that I saw. I would say probably a good model game for all those nowaday games that use strategically placed minions and potent thought-out strikes to win. It was incredibly fun as well, especially when your opponent sent his cavalry against your infantry (AKA ...a slaughter).

The Bad
Tiny little guys, no actual fight scenes, blood, guts, etc...but strategy is what made this game fun. Also the cheesy little animations weren't that great, like when you'd hijack a train.

The Bottom Line
Really fun and entertaining, even to those that don't like those nowaday games I mentioned before. Simple, relatively easy gameplay, and great for versus battles with friends or relatives who are videogame inclined.

Lemmings (NES)

Super cool little strategy game...

The Good
First game like it that I played. Pretty addicting gameplay. Its pace was perfect, as per difficulty, and who doesn't love to push that little suicidal self-destruct button, followed by a comical barrage of "Oh no!" as they all blow up.

The Bad
The learning curve can get pretty frustrating at times, but its also what makes it a really good game.

The Bottom Line
A great puzzle-game. You'll be playing this one for hours. Variation in levels and play is good, and the pace is just right to lure you in with.

Ghostbusters (NES)

A cool little game, especially if your a fan of the movie...

The Good
Pretty entertaining. It'll keep you busy for a while trying to master the gameplay.

The Bad
Especially on the last level when your making your way to the boss, learning curve. So many old NES games were a lot more challenging to play, and you always hate it when you dump a few hours of work into something and lose it all to learning curve. Also, this game does have an ultimate time limit.

The Bottom Line
Kinda neat, a little challenging, but, all in all, pretty fun.

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES)

One of the best NES games out there...

The Good
Very well planned out strategy/RPG game. Twists, plots, and secrets everywhere. Beasts are stronger at night, weapons and armor get cooler by the hour, and the base storyline is unmatched, trying to reform Dracula so you can kill him once and for all.

The Bad
Nothing about this game was bad. It can drag at times when you are stuck, but thats the fun of old Zelda/RPG-styled games.

The Bottom Line
A must play. Many hours of fulfilling gameplay. One of the best RPG-style games ever made, compensating for its time period. You'd probably need a strategy guide to figure out all the hidden items and doors. Unmatched in originality of gameplay, depth of storyline, and feel.

Blades of Steel (NES)

Awesome little hockey game....

The Good
I love the little scuffle scenes, where you hit a guy enough and all the sudden you throw your gloves of and duke it out. First time I remember an actual cut scene to a one-on-one fighting game, and, of course, if you lost the fight they drug you off the rink.

The Bad
Graphics, but who cares with an NES game.

The Bottom Line
A very well put together little hockey game. Fun and easy, especially with a friend around to play head to head. Pretty smooth game play.

Crystalis (NES)

Really great and involving original RPG...

The Good
A very involving storyline and the first with a well-balanced mix of sci-fi and fantasy that I played. The first game I played where they killed off established characters. I remember one scene in the game in particular where you go to this town of wizards and wizard trainees and are told to continue on with your questing, then you get this urgent flash message some time later telling you to return quickly and when you return, the whole town has been massacred. Totally a "No way..." feeling, especially then when it wasn't the standard to wipe out entire towns. Gets you a little more involved than other RPG's of the same time period.

The Bad
Obviously graphics, but thats the great part of RPG's at that time. The storyline had to make up for the lack of technology.

The Bottom Line
Swept me off of my shoes back in the day...I remember playing it for days and always something new was happening. Time to scroll around and explore and gain experience, but its not entirely at your own pace as you are prompted by current events in the game...so much more proactive/reactive play than other RPG's of the same time period. I considered it pretty revolutionary and different, as a young 10 year old master of the RPG.
