Overview edit · view history

Digital Eclipse is a division of the game development studio Other Ocean Emeryville based in Emeryville, USA.

The division has its origins in the company Digital Eclipse Software, Inc. that initially focused on the emulation of classic titles between 1992 and 2012 when the studio was closed.

Digital Eclipse was revived when on 8th June 2015 Other Ocean Group Inc. announced the acquisition of the Digital Eclipse brand. Other Ocean had become the new home of former Digital Eclipse Software founder Andrew Ayre. Previously he headed Backbone studio Backbone Charlottetown in Canada and in May 2007 he and several other former Digital Eclipse employees spun off from Backbone becoming Other Ocean Interactive Ltd.

Along with the acquisition of the brand, Other Ocean announced Digital Eclipse would become a division of Other Ocean Emeryville. It involves the original Digital Eclipse founder Ayre, as well as Mike Mika who had acted as technical director for the original Digital Eclipse, and former Gamasutra writer Frank Cifaldi. The new Digital Eclipse focuses on video game preservation, bringing classic titles to modern system through emulation in the spirit of the Digital Eclipse origins.

Around the summer of 2018 Digital Eclipse Bothell popped up, most likely established as a new studio and based in Bothell (USA). From then on the original Digital Eclipse listed here is referred to as Digital Eclipse Emeryville.

The company was acquired by Atari SA on 31 October 2023.
