When GameTap LLC began, it delivered hundreds of the "greatest games-on-demand" plus original programming via a broadband-connected PC for a monthly fee. To access GameTap, players securely downloaded and installed Turner-developed client software from the website which acted as a gateway to the GameTap vault.
Because games resided securely on the PC, not across a network, they acted just as if they were still on the console or at the arcade. Fast response times, 3D effects, colors, and characters were all present and accounted for. New games and original programming were added to the service each week on Thursdays. GameTap supported navigation and game play using keyboard and mouse, as well as most USB peripherals.
Owned by Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.), GameTap was launched in October of 2005 with an initial offering of 300 games. The total number of games within the vault reached well over 800 as of March 2007.
In March of 2009, GameTap changed its focus and restructured its business model. The GameTap Player was changed to the GameTap Plug-in with service handled through a website instead.
In October 2010 the company closed its Atlanta, Georgia, office, keeping only their San Francisco, California offices open. Additionally the company drastically cut back their offering of classic games and turned support to 64 bit. Hundreds of classics were removed from their library.

Following a number of news reports to this effect, GameTap confirms through its official blog that the Macintosh version of their service is to be discontinued within the next two weeks, coinciding with a then upcoming update.

It is revealed GameTap will be turned over to the Paris-based Metaboli, which delivers a similar service. Turner will continue managing the brand until early 2009, and then Metaboli will assume direct management of the business and brand.
