Description

Donald Duck Advance is the GBA version of Goin' Quackers, released on multiple other systems as a 3D platformer. Like the GBC version, the GBA release is a traditional 2D side-scroller.

The storyline is the same as in the other versions: Merlock has kidnapped Daisy Duck and Donald tries to rescue her with the help of Gyro Gearloose's teleporter. Donald must move through four environments, each consisting of shorter levels: Duckie Mountain, Duckburg, Magica De Spell's manor and Merlock's temple. The goal in most levels is to collect three energy spheres, which will make the level exit open up. To get to them, Donald must take out or evade many enemies, jump over dangerous gaps and brave other hazards. To do so, he can attack, jump on top of enemies and even double jump. He can also start running, a skill used to jump farther or to survive in one of the chase levels. One level in each of the four worlds differs from the norm in that Donald either has to flee from an enemy or try to catch something. Each level features several setback points for restarting upon loss of a life. The levels include a lot of stars that Donald can collect. Collecting 100 awards a life and collecting all stars in all levels unlocks a secret bonus. Progress in the game is stored via passwords.

Like Mud off a Duck’s Back

The Good
There are several nice signs of this remake of the GBC version being shown. The cutscene artwork has now been brushed up with better choice of colour and texture. The levels themselves have much better and bigger layouts, which sport brighter colours and a generous amount of detail, but perhaps not enough tilesets. Gameplay is fairly easy with responsive controls and the same spot on camera view. Sadly this is where the fun ends.

The Bad
The game takes the major flaw straight from the GBC version, which is the same lazy narrative writing between cutscenes, with no room to fix them, just when you had some animation from the PS1 version make a few seconds of appearance. At least it does spare us the bad claymation graphics. And then there's the uninteresting music tracks from the GameCube/PS2 version.

Because this is not a straight up carbon copy of its Game Boy Color counterpart, new problems arise starting with the HUD which is invading your screen space at the top rather than fixed on a bar at the bottom. Sounds during the gameplay get increasingly repetitive and annoying taking overlaying the music tunes, it's almost like a bad techno remix. And finally the most important thing missing from this game is boss fights (except Merlock), so you won't be fighting the Beagle Boys or Magica de Spell. All in all a total letdown.

The Bottom Line
The game isn't too different from other known platformers like Zool. At this point Ubisoft may have had enough of porting and updating "Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers" altogether, because this last port really has nothing new to show, maybe even less than the PS1 version. It is hard to recommend this version over the GBC version and vice versa. If the game was done as a 3D isometric platformer similar to "Spyro: Season of Ice", then it would have been okay. There's a whole better variety of handheld Disney games out there.
