All right. The graphics are really cool, Bullet Time is really cool, but the rest is standard shooter fare. With just a short single player mode, the fun runs out too quickly, and I, for one, want more Payne! Even with its shortcomings, somehow (by buying it), get your hands on Max Payne and enjoy the melted goodness. No doubt, user created mods and levels will be out soon enough to extend Max to greater heights. Just make sure you enjoy what you have, instead of wrangling with what was left out.

Max Payne is the story of an undercover cop framed for murder who must fight his way to the top of a criminal organization to clear his name. A classic pulp-noir tale, Payne?s story comes through in the form of a graphic novel in between scenes of bullet-dodging violence, narrated in gravel-voiced style by Max Payne himself.

Max Payne is not a perfect game(no game really is) but is easily one of the best games to come out in recent memory. If you are even remotely interested in the genre or game style pick this game up and settle in for a good long gaming session, because once Max Payne has you in his sights, it is damn hard to shake him.

On it's own, bullet time would simply be a very cool gimmick. However, it is wrapped up in a game with incredible graphics, a compelling storyline, and an immersive experience. All of these features are expertly combined in Max Payne, creating a candidate for game of the year. A note of caution, though, Max Payne's system requirements are steep, so be sure that you have the hardware to run the game before you buy it.

WindowsGamingExcellence
In conclusion, Max Payne is an all around exceptional game. The graphics, sound, gameplay, and the addicting and unique Bullet-Time affect all set Max Payne apart from most games on the shelves. If you have enjoyed any other type of shooter in the past, Max Payne comes highly recommended. As many people say, "they don't get much better than this."

This is a game that belongs on the shelf of any action/shooter game fan. The only reason it wasn’t given a 10 is because room has to be saved at the top for a game that comes along that is better. And given that Max Payne has set a new standard, you can count on game developers working harder to out-do it. That will be some trick.

Max Payne is a groundbreaking game; it takes the 3rd Person shooter to new levels. From the slickly presented and gorgeous graphics to the Max FX engine, that handles high amounts of detail, and clever scripting with a great degree of success. Bullet holes stick around, so does the blood, though no bullet holes or damage to the textures of the characters has been included in the game, but this isn't a detriment. Max himself is well animated and thanks to the innovative movement and control system never feels clunky or sluggish. The inclusion of bullet time and camera to the game adds the icing to an already fairly layered cake. Max Payne some have said is far too short, of this I do agree but if you let this new slice of gaming action slip you by on that fact, you're doing yourself and Remedy a grave injustice.

WindowsGame Vortex
Any action fan worth their salt would be foolish not to pick up Max Payne. The gorgeous setting, the excellent graphics, and the solid gameplay all conspire to make the best action game I've played in a long, long time. While the violence inherent in the game may turn some people off, they're missing out on one of the most exciting game releases this year. You owe it to yourself to get a little Payne; it's one game people will be talking about for a while.

It isn’t very often that I have to pry myself away from a game I’m reviewing nowadays. Usually I’m able to let good enough alone, but not with Max Payne. Mr. Payne took one look at me and said, "your time is mine, young man." Who am I to argue? This is the type of game I find myself thinking about in the wee hours of the morning as I’m trying to get to sleep. There are so many incredible ways to put bullets into baddies it’ll make your head spin.

Over all, Max Payne is a great game, and I am very much looking forward to the next one in the series. A little less corny dialogue and a longer game would make any sequel a hit, though I doubt that this first one will fail. Its just too much fun to play not to be a success!

Max Payne sets out to do certain things, and does them extremely well. The entire point is to make the player feel like a troubled man with nothing to lose who rampages through New York in search of revenge, and it succeeds in this goal with brilliant precision. You will enjoy the raw feeling of the New York underworld, barrel-rolling into a room full of thugs and taking them out and, at the end, bringing ferocious justice down on the head of a criminal mastermind who sorely deserves it. As if that wasn't enough, once you get a taste of bullet time you'll never want to go back to regular computer game combat.

The gameplay alone makes this a must-own, but there's much more to this game. While the plot arc itself is not really that great (there's never any huge shocking revelation) and perhaps a bit clichéd (at least in terms of the film noir form), the way it's presented is top-notch. I much prefer an impressive telling of a reasonable story than an amazing telling of a really convoluted jumbled mess of a story (read: Metal Gear Solid 2). But what makes me give this a final score of 9.5/10 is just the overall atmosphere of the game. It's a mature-themed, bloody story, and the graphic novel and voiceovers, well interspersed into the action, treat it like one.

At times Max Payne is more movie than game, with stunning camera angles, jarring replays and an involved plot that not only moves the storyline along, it sets the tone for a hardcore action experience. If it weren’t for the minimal graphic bugs and occasional chunky backgrounds, this game would hit a near perfect score. Payne is one of the most robust, innovative and intense shooters to hit the market since the original Tomb Raider. Look out Lara, I see a Payne coming to theaters near you.

WindowsPlay.tm
To conclude then, Max Payne is nothing short of sheer cinematic glory, with a tension and atmosphere easily on a par with any of the top action movies of recent years. Max Payne really does mark a step in a new and exciting direction; and is a game that must be played at all costs. An essential edition to your games collection, providing you've got at least 4-500 Mhz worth of CPU to take advantage of it. So go and buy a copy, and join me in the New York underworld…

It's really COOL! Because Max Payne is single player only, most gamers will want know how long gameplay is. Max Payne contains three acts, each with several chapters (9, 5 and 8) that starts at the same point and leading you to a predetermined cut scene. Overall Max Payne offers about 10-15 hours of gameplay. Certainly you can finish the game even faster if you will use cheats or walktrough :) Max Payne is definitely an excellent game, if you like 3D shooters and John Woo movies you must have it!

Xbox gamers looking for something to do after beating Halo need not look any further than Max Payne. Sure, you could accuse Max Payne of being a little short and lacking a multiplayer mode, but there isn’t a gamer on this earth who will look you in the eye and say the single-player experience isn’t worth a purchase. Suspending time, then going into a room flying sideways, unloading round after round, is a great experience, and a necessity for getting through some tricky spots. Add to the great gameplay a gangland epic delivered in a comic book graphic novel style, and Max Payne is a winner through and through.

When a game has been in development for an inordinate length of time, you never can tell how it will finally turn out. Oftentimes, such games end up overwrought, incomplete, or behind the times. But once in a while, the extra time and effort paid by the developers is plainly apparent in the finished product. That's the case with Max Payne. Don't worry about what it doesn't have--you'll relish this highly polished, tightly focused, graphically stunning shooter for what it is. The game's incredible technical accomplishments and its original play mechanics all combine to make it one of the very finest shooters ever made.

Created by Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment, Max Payne was in production for a very long time. It's a gritty third-person shooter that's clearly inspired by the stylish cinematography and choreography of the Hong Kong action movie genre, particularly the work of director John Woo. Like many of Woo's films, Max Payne is rife with gunplay that's almost indescribably beautiful to watch--and yet actually playing it is even better. Max Payne does have a few weaknesses, most notably that it isn't very long and lacks any multiplayer features, but these things are hardly detrimental. After all, it's not often you get an outstanding and original action game that's not just different from all other shooters to date, but also in many ways superior.

Max Payne is still an excellent game that brings new life to the "realistic"-type games that are starting to clutter the game industry. But Max Payne is definitely more like a good action movie with plenty of highly technical and satisfactory gunplay - I'd recommend it to anyone who loves action games.

Surprisingly, Max Payne still holds up. In some ways, it’s even better than the recent third title. Its photo-based graphics manage to look gritty and sharp even without any advanced engine effects, and the particle system is so impressive that it drove those 3DMark video card benchmarks for a time. However, shooting enemies in slow motion actually does get old, mostly due to a lack of variety. Max Payne 2 addresses this somewhat. The sequel doesn’t have the first game’s same self-aware tone though, and while the plot here unravels a bit toward the end, this is still the best of Max Payne’s tales. Great graphics, great shooting, great presentation, all make a great choice for an action game to play if you haven’t already.

WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Max Payne is one of those memorable titles that people will be talking about for years to come. Its impressive graphics, gripping storyline, and fun use of Bullet-Time action elevates the game to the current standard that most others should aspire to. While it would have been great to see a multiplayer component to accompany the single-player action, the single-player is handled nicely, with no sacrifices made that would lower the overall quality. As one of the last products to come out of the respected Gathering of Developers, Max Payne is a quality release that marks the end of an era, and serves as a benchmark for great games to come.

Because MAX PAYNE strives to offer a cinematic experience, it’s only fair to judge it by the same standards I would judge a movie. Whenever I see a movie, I ask myself: Would I see it again? Would I recommend it to friends? Did I waste my money? The answers are yes, yes, and no. MAX PAYNE is no Citizen Kane, but then again I’ve watched Death Wish 4: The Crackdown more times than any of Orson Welles’ movies combined. What can I say, I like guilty pleasures.

Chapeau!

Playing Max Payne is like stepping into an action movie, and most first-person shooter fans will be instantly hooked. The pace is maintained throughout the game and nearly compels you to finish in one sitting, with the occasional awe-inspiring moment driving you to continue. Although the weapons are standard fare, they're effective and made more interesting through the use of Bullet Time effects. If action-packed stories and expending entire clips of ammo from dual Mac-10s in slow motion appeals to you, Max Payne is a sure-fire hit.

All in all, while it has it's faults (some early problems with Geforce 3 cards, lack of animation in the facial textures) these are far and away outweighed by the incredible presentation and sheer playability of this stylish contender for the coveted title of "action game of the year" - Halflife won that once before and until Max, we had not enjoyed a game nearly as much. Now, that crown has been passed on - yes, it's different to Halflife, but with the focus firmly on the experience for the gamer, Remedy have hit the nail firmly on the head: This is the game of the year.

Even without the Bullet Time gimmick, Max Payne would be a first-rate title. The gritty New York City environments are among the most detailed and realistic ever created. Shoot a tile floor and a chunk of tile blows apart. Turn on the shower and water flows. Coolest of all is when you're diving across a room, spraying bullets at your enemies, sending sparks and blood flying, all in dramatic slow motion. While it only takes about ten hours to complete Max Payne, it will be ten of the best hours you've spent on a computer in a long time.

Surprise, surprise, Max Payne turned out not only being one of the best PC games of the year, but also one of the best console games too. Especially this Xbox incarnation, which packs superb visuals and audio. The title is however hampered with a lack of options and it’s cursed with a shortness. But all that is more than made of for with its flashiness, story, and fun gameplay. Not to mention the high level of violence. O yeah, baby!

Playing through Max Payne for the first time is a little like watching Pulp Fiction for the first time: Five minutes after the opening credits you know it’s awesome, and you don’t want it to end. Although the story teeters close to being just window dressing alongside the title’s explosive action and eerie environments, it’ll often draw you in enough to make you actually care about the characters. That may not sound like much, but when dealing with gameplay of this caliber, it’s all too easy for a developer to gloss over a title’s low points in favor of making the most of its strengths.

It is unfortunate that Max Payne is so short, but for me, it was worth playing it. I absolutely enjoyed this game, and I would recommend it to anybody looking for a good action game with plenty of entertaining dialogue and story twists. The noir theme is not to miss, as well – while not quite as intricate and involved as Discworld Noir, it still is worthy of notice, just as are the easter eggs.

The game is somewhat short (roughly 6-8 hours) making it a tough purchase, but there's is no doubt that this is a must play. Action movie fans will love the bullet time feature, gamers will love the story and, well, they'll like the bullet time too.

MacintoshInside Mac Games (IMG)
Even though the Macintosh gaming community has had to wait a long time for the release of this title, Max Payne remains as fresh today as it was when it hit the shelves last year. The reason for this longevity is simple. Max Payne’s enthralling storyline, relentless action and striking sound and visuals make it game with lasting appeal. The only shortcoming of this game is that its demanding system requirements could leave Mac gamers with older machines having a less-than-optimal game play experience.

Max Payne has all the hallmarks of a classic noir adventure but with modern characters and settings?namely, a renegade DEA agent tracking the killer drug Valkyr in a blizzard-bound New York City. Max mixes dingy textures and bleak atmosphere with panels from a graphic novel and solemn narration to create a living, breathing, bleeding New York City underworld. Payne battles Mafia enemies that sound like cartoonish wise guys, but it?s Max?s vitriolic voice-over?full of hard-boiled phrases of melodrama and desperation? that gives the game the most character.

It's almost impossible not to have heard about Max Payne; originally slated for an early 2000 release, this ultra-violent game didn't make its way to the PC till the middle of 2001. Despite this rather lengthy delay, Max Payne lived up to all the hype, showcasing great graphic style, cool cinematics, excellent camera control, and lots and lots of bullets that John Woo would definitely approve of. Max Payne is all action, all the time and Xbox owners will be glad to know the title has been ported to the Xbox faithfully; although there are no new features added to the Xbox version, Max Payne on the Xbox is visually as impressive as it was on the PC. Combine good controls and the addictive gameplay of the title and X-heads will definitely want to experience some Payne this holiday season.

The guys from Remedy announced that they will soon publish the first mods for the game, and they also included all the original development tools they used to design the game, including the level editor, particle editor, skinning editor and the 3DStudioMAX export plug-ins. It is unfortunately clear that there can be no multiplayer mode thanks to the slow-motion feature. We can only wait and see how this will influence Mr. Payne's replay value. As it stands though, Max Payne is a stunning techincal (gameplay) achievement that may be lacking a decent script to truly lead the way into the era of interactive PC movies.

If you are looking for an all out action game with a decent story, Max Payne should keep you happy while it lasts. When you are in the middle of the action, it is intense and very entertaining. None of my complaints would fall under the classification of significant but they did detract from the game somewhat. The further along you get, the more the game will grow on you. Overall, this is one of the better Xbox games available.

Shovelware is an unavoidable side effect of any system launch, but sometimes quick ports of games released elsewhere can prove to be a boon for a console. Take Max Payne on the Xbox. While the PC version was a down and dirty, violent quick fix, with some innovative gameplay elements, it's short game life, high system requirements, and often repetitive action made it something less than the revolutionary game of the year that many touted it as. Strangely enough, however, the game actually feels more at home on a TV screen, and thanks to the Xbox's beefy hardware, Payne looks as good, if not better than its PC counterpart, and sounds fantastic.

All in all PS2 gamers should welcome Max into their lives with a contended smile; though own it on PC if they have one. The graphics are a let down in a game otherwise worthy of it’s PC original, and include all the glorious innovations and subtleties we’ve come to expect. A case of so near, yet so far…

XboxThe Next Level
All of these things come together to make a very enjoyable (and refreshing experience), in which easily could've been a mediocre title at best. However, the game leaves you wanting a little bit more to the Bullet Time feature besides pushing a button just to enable you to make precision shots in a slowed time frame. Perhaps, Remedy can develop more practical reasons for the sequel. But for now, Max Payne stands as a remarkably solid port of the PC version, and trounces its PS2 cousin.
83
PlayStation 2PSX Extreme
To end it off properly, allow me to mention this: between the three consoles the only substantial differences are the visuals. The PS2 version, unfortunately, suffers from a mixed back of textures. However, it doesn't look horrendous, so don't get the wrong idea. The gameplay is edgy, fierce, and there's no doubt that those who play it will enjoy it. But take note of the game's value, as it won't take too long to beat, give it 10 hours and you're there. When it comes down to it all, it's all about Bullet Time, and that alone is worth playing the game. The audio never ceases to impress, as the sound effects kick ass! The games biggest fault is the frame rate and the controls. Altogether, if you're looking for a solid PS2 action title, and you especially love John Woo flicks and the Syphon Filter series, this comes highly recommended.

The first person shooter genre has come a long way since its inception with Wolfenstein 3D, and others. FPS’s have become the jewel of the gaming industry, often pushing computers and consoles past their limit. As these games gained popularity in the PC world they have gradually made the transition to the console realm. Max Payne takes the genre one step further, although taking place in the third-person it inherits much from the FPS style of gameplay. Max Payne on PS2 blends an excellent story with interesting gameplay, decent graphics, and a couple original twists producing a unique gaming experience that is both a hit and a miss.

This time it was the 27th day of December - a Wednesday, and it was freezing. It was the kind of cold that could make an Eskimo's teeth chatter like a well-used telegraph machine. We were all shivering, but it was business as usual, and business as usual meant not much business at all. We wondered if anything could pry us from Old Man Winter's frigid grasp.

While not without its flaws, Max Payne is a must-have for any PC action gamer. It looks simply unbelievable, the gameplay and control is easy and intuitive, and the bullet time makes it the premier action game on the PC. We've entered a new realm here, people, and I can see the spoon.

There has been much ballyhooing and hype surrounding Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment’s Max Payne game, ever since the initial screen shots of the PC version. The game was delayed for a couple of years to refine and smooth out the edges. When it was released earlier this year, the reviews were rave and the game turned out to be quite a good one.

A funny thing happened to me when I finished Max Payne early this morning. I felt incredibly empowered, and kept re-thinking all of the events of the game. I wanted to talk about it with everyone, without sounding too much like a caffeine-induced cretin yahoo, and I'm quite sure I failed. But a good game will do that to you. It'll make you talk. Max Payne will do that to you.

But Max Payne's graphics are beautiful -- especially its graphic-novel-style interstitial sequences (narrated by Max himself, in true film-noir style). And its tone is perfect, right down to the self-consciously cheesy dialogue: "He was dead. I could tell by the empty, accusing stare in his eyes." Despite its repetitive nature, the game is compelling enough to play from start to finish. There are no multiplayer options, though, so once you're done, you'll never play it again.

Silti, jos Max Payne -ilmiö on jäänyt sinulta väliin ja PS2 koristaa olohuonettasi, huonomminkin rahasi voit sijoittaa. Herra Paynen Sony-debyytti on eleetön ja hieman vaisu tulkinta hänen alkuperäisestä esiintymisestään, muttei silti mikään floppi. Remedyn peli nimittäin onnistui oikeasti hengittämään uutta verta kaluttuun räiskintägenreen, eikä sitä vie pois edes hieman vieras pelialusta tai laiskahko ohjelmointi. Tästä on hyvä jatkaa, Suomi-pojat.

Unfortunately, the PS2 shows its limitations when it comes to playing an acceptable port of a PC title. That being said, this is still an awesome game, and if you haven’t played it on the PC or Xbox, you’ll never know what you’re missing. It is a PS2 port of one of the best games of last year after all – that should be enough to grab anyone’s attention.

And so, perhaps the best, simplest thing I can say about Max Payne is that it is still fun. Busting goons in the face with a shotgun or the various other tools of death that Max walks around with is satisfying and entertaining. While there are a few trouble spots and the game is definitely aging, it's showing few signs of wear. If you've never taken the time to check out Max Payne, you owe it to yourself to don his trench coat and take a trip into one of the worst nights of his life.

Gamers have often debated the life of the first-person shooter, but games like Max Payne will surely keep it around for some time to come. Whereas most offer nothing new aside from bigger and more ridiculous weapons, Max Payne offers a new feel. The tone and story (with an honest to God story, climax and denouement (although it does descend into the overused conspiracy territory), help set Max Payne stand apart from the rest. It's not the greatest FPS ever, and it's not the most distinctive, but it's consistent, methodical, and well executed. You'll be racing to finish it, and that's what makes for a successful game.

Created by Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment, Max Payne was in production for a very long time. It's a gritty third-person shooter that's clearly inspired by the stylish cinematography and choreography of the Hong Kong action movie genre, particularly the work of director John Woo. Like many of Woo's films, Max Payne is rife with gunplay that's amazing to watch--and yet actually playing it is even better. Max Payne does have a few weaknesses.

Into each life, a little Payne must fall. In the case of fallen-cop turned avenging-angel Max Payne, a little goes an extremely long way and feels just like the delicate kiss of a metal slug shot at high velocity through naked flesh. Payne, the violent star of his own eponymous third-person action-adventure title, has earned top marks on the PC; now, with his eyes on even bigger game, the anti-hero's anti-hero goes shooting on Microsoft's Xbox.

You remember back in the late eighties and early nineties when Steven Segal and Jan Clude Van Damme ruled the day in action movies that no one can remember anymore? Fortunately, their limited careers are over at this point and no longer does the world need to suffer through 90 minutes of over-written dialogue and over-the-top action sequences that cost more money than most small studios make in a year. Instead, we have video games such as Max Payne to fill in the small shoes of those terrible actors, and fortunately the game is much better than any movie made by those two clowns.

Unfortunately, many of the things I’ve been praising this title for are the same things that made the PC version so great. As a port to a console system, it isn’t any surprise that the gameplay will be really fun, given that the PC version was a complete blast. I suppose, thinking about it, this is both a drawback and a feature of the PS2 version as, while it isn’t really suited for the console environment, Remedy has still produced a fun and playable title. Still, I can’t help but caution people that as a PC owner, Max Payne for the PS2 won’t get much gameplay while I’ve still got the PC version on my shelf.

If you have read Game Informer before, you already know that we think Max Payne on the PC was one of the best titles of 2001. Hands down, the game deserves it. Its Matrix-inspired, slow-motion gun fights (known as Bullet Time) just made blasting bad guys into next week feel so good. On the PC and even the Xbox, Max Payne is pure video game bliss. On the PlayStation 2, well…it’s just good. Now I know you are reading this and thinking to yourself that old Andy has lost it, but the fact of the matter is the PlayStation 2 version just isn’t quite the same. The save-anywhere feature has been removed, the control is not nearly as fluid as it needs to be, and something about the game just seems off.

If the objectionable material is something you don't mind , then you will most likely find the game worth every penny you paid for it. When you get finished with the game, you will feel like you just starred in a big budget Hollywood action flick. The game includes one of the most compelling stories, you will find in a video game. It also features one of the best endings, I've ever seen.

The aiming controls are non-intuitive (pushing up aims down and vice versa), so most players will need practice before getting comfortable with it. In addition, the camera sometimes gets "out of wack" which makes you feel disoriented - very inconvenient during shootouts. I should also mention that you'll need to sit through tons of loading screens, although I'm guessing they pass more quickly than they do in the PS2 version. Max Payne is a good game to play when you need to blow off some steam after a hard day's work. It's not for kids, but mature adults in the mood for action should dig it.

Like Woos Mission: Impossible 2, Max Paynes style may be well presented, but the substance itself is a bit thin. Hopefully, if there is a follow-up to Max Payne, well see something more akin to the great works of Scorsese: gritty and rough but also graceful, well-paced and meaningful throughout. What editing techniques work in film and television may not be the best devices to use in a game. Bullet Time seems to create additional hurdles in the games design that will need to be conquered. Max Payne is a decent experience, but it isnt the awesome shooter that many people are claiming it to be.

Here I sit, frantically trying to come up with a witty and informative method for writng yet another Max Payne review. But I can't, so I won't. Just know that while the PC and Xbox versions are virtually identical, this PS2 incarnation sticks out like a sore thumb.

The problem with Max Payne on the PlayStation 2 is that it isn't the experience the PC game was. If you have a reasonably specced PC, you should seek out the original game in all its intemperate glory. The PS2 version is still the same game, but the higher frequency of load times and questionable graphics leave a lot to be desired. Max Payne on the PC is a stunning game, with an atmosphere unmatched by any other action game released in the last 12 months. Unfortunately for Remedy and PS2 owners, visual stimulation was a key aspect of the game's atmosphere. A piano still echoes resoundingly at the game's every twist and turn, but Max PS2 has lost a lot of his energy, and I find him incredibly difficult to recommend. With about six hours worth of gameplay and none of the glamour, he's not worth £35, either.

But as I said at the very outset, all these niggles strike one well after the game has been played. Max Payne is a spectacular experience, not an intellectual one. Do not search for subtleties here or in-depth plots here – this is not a game that will win awards for its storyline or richness of character.

Sadly the translation from PC to console hasn't been entirely smooth for Max Payne, and although the fully customisable controls are surprisingly easy to use on the standard Xbox gamepad, the rest of the conversion has been rather sloppy. Max lacks the necessary polish to stand out on the Xbox, and the passing of time hasn't been kind to his bullet-riddled good looks. If your PC can't take the heat then this is the next best way to experience the Payne, but it doesn't fare so well on its own merits.

Max Payne amounts to little more than a really cool tech demo with an average game design stretched and made to fit around it. Its decent enough if you can overlook the repetition and you might even be entertained briefly, but its pretty clear that the gimmick made the game, and not the other way around.
