The TI Speech Synthesizer plugged into the TI-99/4A plugged into the expansion port on the right side of the computer.Ā The Speech Synthesizer used the TMS5110/5220 series of speech chips that were usedĀ in theĀ first wave of commercial voice synthesizers in the late 70's and early 80's. In an application, they allow speech data to be stored in a highly compressed format, which was very important in the days when ROM space was expensive.Ā The same series of chips were used in the Speak ' n Spell educational toy and the Gauntlet and Star Wars arcade games.
