I have fond memories of playing this game as a kid. I was about 13 when I first played it, and I remember it being difficult, but not impossible to progress in. I think I made it around a third of the way into the island and definitely freed the second refinery, which is not little considering how quickly I usually grew tired of most games.

Now I wanted to play this game again, and I find it almost unplayably difficult, even on the lowest difficulty setting. I'm playing the same version I had back in the day, so it didn't get more difficult because I'm on a different patch or anything. So it must be that compared to 24 years ago, I must have gotten massively worse at this game. And I mean massively. I'm reading online and in FAQs that it should be no problem to capture 4-5 sectors per game-day even on the high difficulty level. I'm on Easy and I can capture about that many sectors in total before every mercenary that will still work for me is dead.

What the freak am I doing wrong, how are you supposed to play this game?

Of course I can't afford the better mercenaries in the beginning. I also tried playing with the pre-made team, thinking that the developers probably prepared at least a passably workable combination, but it's not better. When my mercs shoot, they have maybe a 20% hit rate, while all the enemies seem to hit 80% of the time or more. Which is extra bad because every hit does permanent damage which, with my poor medics, then requires taking about 3 days off entirely, with nobody really doing anything, to recover until they're fit enough again to take on another sector.

And because the mercs are so bad, shooting at enemies and then taking cover is not an option because of how few action points they have. Especially after they've been hit once, they usually have single-digit AP levels at the beginning of each round, which is barely enough for a clumsy shot and crouching down afterwards. So most of the time they're sitting ducks as soon as the first shots have been fired.

Not that cover does much, since about half of the enemies seem to carry grenades, which there seems to be absolutely no defense against and which will easily drop two thirds of a mercenary's hitpoints, which means he'll be a "patient" instead of on duty again for the next three days, if he survives, which is unlikely. Meanwhile, my own team doesn't even really manage to throw a grenade far enough to not have it blow up on themselves.

The strategies all say stuff like not to leave too many mercenaries at base for recovery, but even if I try to progress as carefully as I can, taking 1–2 sectors will leave more than half of my squad severly injured, so not having most of the team at home recovering all the time just doesn't work for more than a few days, the HPs just disappear several times as quickly as they can be healed.

I have no freaking clue how and why I'm so much worse at this game than as a teenager. My mercenaries keep getting mangled, and no matter how defensively I try to play to prevent as many injuries as possible, they're still way too many and too severe for progress in the game to be possible. Naturally, I also tried to play more offensively, maybe I was just more reckless at 13. But of course, that makes it even worse, my squad will be dead within about 4 combat turns.

What the heck?

What I'm mostly asking: is there a specific thing I'm doing completely wrong? Should I just splurge on experienced mercenaries from the beginning and ingore the level 1 characters entirely? Should I retreat more often when I make enemy contact? Am I somehow choosing the wrong order of sectors to head into? Is there an important feature I'm forgetting about?

I've never played anything in this game series, but there are some online suggestions that may apply - this advice is for JA2:

Some games AI get better with faster CPU:s, like chess games evaluating more moves in shorter time, but I'm not sure if this is what happens here?

Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm actually playing it on PCem, with cycle-accurate emulation of a 50 MHz 486, so that shouldn't be it :) And I think with JA2 there was a specific patch that made the game notoriously difficult. I remember lots of people complaining about JA2's difficulty! Frustratingly, not so much the first one, although that might also be because it came out when much fewer people were online.

Because it's such a darn fun game even when being bad at it, I restarted the game for another try, and I seem to be doing slightly better so far. I managed to capture three sectors in the first day without any injuries to my mercenaries. Let's see how it goes from now on. If it's better, then it's mostly two things I did differently this time. First, I notched up my defensiveness yet another level. Never making a move that could end in less than excellent cover, run and hide even when it costs me the opportunity to shoot back, etc.

And second, maybe more importantly, I hired two good marksmen that I felt I couldn't afford that early on in the game. If that was the key and the game keeps being more manageable now, it basically just means that around 50% of the mercenaries are useless and should never be hired :D

Also, I'm still playing on Easy, and this time also enabled quicksaves during combat (although so far I haven't made use of it). I'm not a big fan of quicksave-heavy playing, but hey, in the end the game should also still be fun :D

The trick is to familiarize yourself with the locations of items, random enemy positions and have the right kind of mercenaries for different stuff.

I suggest having at starting with at least one high in mechanics like Speck. Get yourself decent and not too expensive mercenaries like Bud, Ivan, Wolf, Ice, and Snake. Sparky is okay if you can get around the fact that she cannot swim. You will definitely need Fidel as he is good with shooting and explosives. Start with Four mercenaries on the first day. Having more is better, but you’d better make sure you have a decent regular income from sap trees and cold cash pickups. Training a mercenary at camp kind of wastes opportunities, so I like to train them on the field. To avoid risks, it’s better to disarm explosives, fix items and unlock some doors when a sector is secured so you can save and load as many times as you like until you get something right. Try to get jackets with the most pockets so you can maximize item management. Keep items like the best first aid kit, metal detector, and listening devices to increase your likeliness of beating the enemy without suffering casualties.

During combat, stealth and careful maneuvers are always the better methods of fighting. Keep your mercenaries in small groups so they cover each other and cover more ground. If you spot an enemy in the open, fire on him at point blank range with as many action points as possible to ensure dead accuracy and high damage. If an enemy is taking cover, try to draw him out. Always be sure to have your mercenaries take cover to mitigate damage from enemy fire. If enemies are clustered in a tight group, a grenade or Molotov cocktail will definitely clear them out.

There are a decent number of maps of the game at https://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/PC/index.htm#JaggedAlliance if you want to familiarize yourself with the sectors. Feel free to ask me if there are specific things that need elaboration on the game.

Thank you! Those are some nicely specific hints, I will keep those in mind and return to this post occasionally :)

So far I've seen quite some variation in enemy placement over my different attempts. The last time I particularly struggled with sector 29 and that little clearing which is only accessible from the water. At least some of the enemies always hole up there, and you have to get extremely close to the trees to be able to attack them, then one of the enemies lobs a grenade over the trees and it's over. I'm not yet sure how to try and tackle it this time.

I did start out with a full 8 mercenaries from day 1 again, but made sure to get some good specialists in. Decent marksmen from among the cheaper mercs, plus Ivan to have at least one really good shot. Then one good expert in each area of explosives (Smoke), mechanics (Speck) and a half-decent medic (Beth).

As you mention the equipment I think I'll have to experiment more with what the different tools do and how they're used. I had stuff like the metal detector, wall probe, extended ears, camouflage kit etc. but never did anything with it but carry them around, and the manual doesn't even go into those.

I might get back to you if I get stuck in a particular spot again in this new playthrough! :) I'll see how day 2 goes now. But I have to say, the super slow, careful and defensive style of playing is a lot of fun.
