Not the huge leap forward Commandos 2 was, but just as fun.
The Good
Here the maps are much more compact and action oriented compared to Commandos 2, and initially I though they wouldn't match the style of the game; however Pyro managed to preserve the tactical approach while offering more intense scenarios.
The soundtrack is brilliant and I even extracted some of the music pieces onto my hard drive for later use. Graphically the game shows incredible detail and particle effects and explosions have been improved.
Actual gameplay remains unchanged, with maybe a few small additions at some key places. Missions are exciting and well planned, and thoughtful and strategic approach is required in classic Commandos style.
The Bad
The game suffered from a rushed release and it showed in a bunch of areas. It had lower maximum resolution than Commandos 2, but it had small impact on the overall appearance. The indoor 3D scenes have low resolution textures and the units especially suffer. The environments your team gets to visit are not as diverse as those found in the originals. The interface was completely redesigned and didn't match the controls everyone was used to in Commandos 2. I downloaded a Hot Key mod from the official message boards which thankfully fixed this. And lastly the game is shorter than any other in the series, a result of a premature release which didn’t include a lot of planned content.
The Bottom Line
A step back from Commandos 2 in some respects, i still enjoyed it a lot despite its problems. If you loved the previous games but skipped this installment due to negative feedback you shouldn't have. The core problems of Commandos 3 have little do to with gameplay, and while annoying can be easily ignored.
