Description

My First Amazing British Isles Explorer is a single player edutainment title for children aged between five and nine years of age. As this is a British Isles Explorer it includes England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland. It is intended for both home and classroom use, it is linked to the UK National Curriculum, and the manual gives advice to teachers on how to demonstrate the features to pupils.

The main menu is based on a child's bedroom with a large interactive map of the British Isles on the wall. Many of the objects in the bedroom are animated and may trigger an activity (see below) but the wall map is a key part of the title. As the cursor moves over towns and features it triggers animations and factoids about the various locations.
To the left of the map are icons for;* Geography Of The British Isles: where the player can find maps, definitions, flags and national anthems

  • Great Britain: Information of the countries that make up Great Britain, the languages, climate, length and breadth etc
  • Ireland: The same kind of information as described above
  • Fact File: Longest rivers, highest mountains etc
  • Where I Live: a feature that allows the user to do just that

Activities:1. Explorer Challenge: Somewhere within the bedroom is a telephone. When located and used the player will receive a message from Joe who is travelling but has left an important package behind. He will ask the player to deliver it to him and gives a clue to his location, however when the player goes to the appropriate location Joe and his family have moved on leaving a clue to their next location. There are ten rounds to this game and at the end the player is rewarded with a medal.
There are five challenges in all and when the player has completed them all they become a "British Isles Explorer" and receive a printable certificate. 2. Sticker Book: The pop-up factoids on the map hide fifty stickers grouped into ten themes. To collect a sticker the player, when a pop-up is triggered, clicks on the Sticker Book icon and must then answer a multiple choice question correctly for the sticker to be added to their album. 3. Raise The Flag! Quiz: When the player answers a question correctly a flag will be raised a little higher. Once it reaches the top an on-screen vehicle will start up and drive away. There are five flags to raise, the questions are multiple choice and the quiz has two difficulty settings 4. Other non game-like activities are; * Notice Board: At each location visited the player can send themselves a postcard and the Notice Board is where they are displayed * Map Outlines: Printable outlines of each country * Maps Of The World And Europe: Illustrated maps showing the British Isles in relation to everywhere else * Weather Report: It's unclear whether this is a link to a live weather site or if it is generated within the game, either way the report is narrated and can be saved to the game's Television. * Suitcase: This can be accessed from any screen, it holds the print, copy, configuration, help and quit options. * Television: This shows the Weather Report (see above) and a video of The Atlantic Ocean.
