Description
Jack and the Beanstalk is a 1-player arcade game for the BBC Micro. The player controls Jack as he tries to steal bags of gold from the giant in the clouds. Gameplay is divided into two levels: the ground level with Jack's house, and a sky level representing the giant's castle.
There's a beanstalk that grows in the center of the screen beside Jack's house when the weather is rainy. When the sun comes out, caterpillars run along the bottom of the screen and shorten the plant. The player can collect caterpillars and butterflies without damage. If the player jumps and touches the axe it instantly cuts down the plant. The player can collect golden eggs in this section, and must avoid touching the smoke from Jack's chimney.
Jack can climb the complete beanstalk to reach the giant's castle. Here, the giant and deadly snails patrol. The giant moves about randomly until the player picks up gold. Then the giant follows the player and will even chase him to the ground level. Jack must quickly reach the bottom of the beanstalk and cut down the tree before the Giant reaches the bottom. Gold can then be stored at Jack's house while he waits for the plant to regrow. The player can pick up a shovel in the castle to dig holes, which kill snails and slow down giants. The player has limited time to collect as many bags of gold as possible.
