Remake of Microprose's M1 Tank Platoon

The Good
It was a worthy successor, although the people who wrote it had nothing to do with the original Microprose team. By that stage Microprose had been sold, absorbed and resold, so by this stage it was just a name.

It had extremely good graphics, even with their software renderer! Nice rolling landscapes; deserts and forests. Towns. A class job.

It was fast and furious, and the sound was well done.

The Bad
The original Microprose team were experts in Gameplay. They did something with the original that made you keep wanting to go back for more. It was hard to pin down what that was, and the remake missed it. I played it for a bit, and moved on.

It was very buggy! Story was they did the old 'Ship it and we'll do a patch.' It got a very bad word of mouth because of this.

The Bottom Line
Looks good, but not addictive like the original (which BTW you can play with DOSBOX)

Trivia

Cancelled sequel

A scheduled update to this sim, named Tank Platoon!, was cancelled by Hasbro/MicroProse after the poor sales performance of Gunship!, the game it was supposed to "link up" with.

Vehicles

With a bit of text file editing, it is actually possible to drive any vehicle in the game, including the APCs, the jeeps, and even helicopters! And they would have appropriate weapon sights! A M-2 Bradley would have a TOW missile sight, the HUMVEE jeeps would have machine gun sights, and so on.
