Hangsim

Moby ID: 4697

Description

Hangsim is a flight simulator that simulates the sport of hang gliding or paragliding.

The game objective is quite simply to stay aloft, with a simple interface that forces you to use your senses to find drafts, thermals, avoid turbulence, etc. and carry on flying. Includes a series of scenarios that introduce some aspects of the basic gameplay as well as a free-form flying mode.

Graphics are completely Direct3D accelerated and include a host of weather and lighting effects.

Flew like a brick, sounded divine.

The Good
I played the demo version of this game rather than the full game. I had problems with the flight mechanics, see below, but was really impressed with the music that accompanied the game.

The music is light, airy, and was really quite superb in an ambient, chilled out kind of way. The aircraft in this game have no engines so the only sound effects were the rush of the wind and that seemed to enhance rather than compete with the music. It's a shame that the music stopped when the game was paused because I could happily listen to it while I'm working.

The Bad
The models were pretty detailed for a game that's thirteen years old though the maps looked blurred and indistinct and the ground shadow was totally unconvincing.

It's not really fair to give a game a bad review based on its demo because problems I had problems in getting this demo version to run may well have been resolved in the final version. However,I did find that the display was corrupted and although it seemed to run smoothly it was unplayable. Fortunately there were alternate display settings for Direct 3D, MMX mode, and a couple of others.
Playing around with these gave me a good looking game which unfortunately ran at a really slow frame rate, so while I could get decent screen shots it was still unplayable.

The Bottom Line
It's showing its age but it's a nice idea, well drawn, and with great music. On the right pc it will probably play a lot better than it did on mine.
Ultimately though the blurry scenery lets it down and, while it looks like it would be fun for a while, I would not see this as a keeper.
