NASCAR 2000 managed to make me have fun while racing in an 81 lap circle. If you like the sport then you will absolutely love this game. If you aren't all that big of a fan you still may want to give this game a try. Although I would rather not admit it, it's rather fun!

The main differences between this game and the previous NASCAR 99 version are the improved graphics, updated physics, and more realistic feel and control in addition to the updated roster. This game is a lot of fun and is sure to please NASCAR racing fans of all ages. With plenty of options and racing modes, it is sure to keep your attention for quite awhile too. If you’re into racing games, this one is a safe buy and will not disappoint you.

Overall, I have to give a nod to the team at EA for making what is really a remarkably good NASCAR simulator. As I mentioned previously, if you’re a fan of NASCAR racing and own a PSX, there is no reason at all for you not to go out and buy NASCAR 2000. Unfortunately, no matter how good the graphics, physics, and racing engine all are, you’re going to be bored to tears with this title if you’re not into NASCAR style racing, and I believe that the majority of gaming racing fans fall into this category. As I mentioned before, if you know whether you’re a NASCAR type racer or an autocross type racer, you know whether you’ll like NASCAR 2000 or not. In the end, though, as bored as I eventually became, driving ceaselessly to the left around a never ending series of ovals, I have to admit that NASCAR 2000 is a remarkably solid game, well deserving of a bit of praise.

Previous EA NASCAR games have always been heavy on features, but stumbled when it came to aesthetics. Not so here. The graphics, while not outstanding (like Gran Turismo 2 or R4), are very well detailed in terms of making the cars look identical to their counterparts and doing the tracks justice, Also, the game's steady frame-rate doesn't sputter during the split-screen two-player mode.

Bad physics occur elsewhere too, especially in crashes. A head-on collision will get your garish plastic Chevrolet rocking back and forth on its roof like an egg, suggesting shoddy model design somewhere along the line. A half decent cockpit view and a couple of bonus (non-elliptical) tracks specific to the PlayStation version earn NASCAR 2000 a few points, obscured by nasty graphics and the inherent monotony of the sport.

Mega Fun (76 out of 100) (76%)

Rein spielerisch hat NASCAR 2000 den Sprung ins nächste Jahrtausend sicherlich geschafft. Die Boliden lassen sich sehr realistisch über die Rennpisten steuern. Zudem reizen den Spieler die nervenaufreibenden Kämpfe um Positionen. Die Technik hingegen bleibt weit hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Unvermittelt ploppen beispielsweise ganze Tribünen in das Geschehen. Ferner wirkt die pixelige 3D-Engine des Racers etwas antiquiert und bietet nur wenige Highlights, wie Licht- oder Schatteneffekte.

In the end, NASCAR 2000 is a better version of last year's title with more than enough new options and features to warrant a purchase by anyone who already owns NASCAR 99. If you're a fan of NASCAR and want the best NASCAR game for the PlayStation, this is the one to get. However, if you are simply a racing-game fan who's looking for a new game, keep in mind that NASCAR 2000, while definitely one of the best NASCAR simulations ever, is still all about driving in circles until your eyes bleed.

IGN (7 out of 10) (70%)

NASCAR 2000 is nothing more than average to gamers whose interests lie in different racing styles. I found myself bored as I played through its many courses since there is a serious lack of variety, one which ultimately decides whether it was indeed enjoyable or not. That's not to say this game is bad. In fact, as far as an update goes, it's an excellent one. This year's version has a lot of extras last year's didn't, and it shows in the overall feel and several different modes available for fans of the genre.

Wer auf diese exotische Raserei steht, kann mit NASCAR 2000 die bislang realistischste Umsetzung erwerben. Wem diese Sportart allerdings rein gar nichts sagt, sollte vor dem Kauf lieber ein paar Übertagungen auf einschlägigen Sportsendern verfolgen. Denn obwohl NASCAR sich mehr als alle anderen Rennserien (ausser Stock Car) durch harte Kollisionen auszeichnet und auch deutlich mehr Überholmanöver als die Formel 1 bietet, könnte sich der Zugang für Einsteiger schwierig gestalten. Ansonsten gibt es an NASCAR 2000 nicht viel auszusetzen - im Gegenteil, die peitschenden Rocksounds unterscheiden sich wohltuend von den gängigen Duddel-Sounds anderer Games.
