Description

Stellar Impact is a multiplayer-only, real-time strategy game with a science-fiction setting. Its gameplay principle are influenced by the Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos modification Defense of the Ancients: two teams compete on symmetric built maps. Usually a team consists of multiple players which need to coordinate their efforts in order to win the match. The exact winning condition depends on the playing mode (destroying the whole enemy fleet respectively their main buildings or holding a central point for a certain amount of time), but the most important task is conquer and hold strategically important points on the map. Those give access to technologies, e.g. warp portals or research centers.

Like in all games of this type, unit masses are not the way to win. Each player commands a space ship (one of five types without the DLCs) which is best compared to the heroes of fantasy-based Defense of the Ancients variants. The player can choose four skills out of a skill pool divided into offensive (e.g. rockets), defensive (e.g. shields) and supportive (e.g. regeneration) skills. The ships earn experience points and upgrades after matches which are used to improve (and individualize) the ship. There are also match-specific upgrades which are purchased with research points (generated by research centers). The key to success is a ship development and skill set which matches the ship class and the own playing style. Also important is the maneuvering of the ship; the player needs to regard speed, turning circle, braking distance and sometimes gravity. Despite the space setting, the game is played on a two-dimensional map.

Trivia

Release history

Originally released as commercial game (download-only), the game went free-to-play in September 2011. However, the implementation was more similar to shareware: players could play the game for free, but were restricted to ships of the first level. The rest of the game was unlocked after buying a premium account. In November 2011, the game officially reverted back to beta status in order to restructure the game for the new business model, including the implementation of an item shop. In February 2012, the business model was reverted back to commercial and the game was made available as paid download from various download platforms. At the same time, the second beta status was abandoned.
