Airfield

Description

Airfield is an add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 which can also be used in conjunction with Microsoft Flight Simulator 95 and Microsoft Flight Simulator (v5.1).

The premise behind this add-on is that real world flying is not all about landing and taking off from major airports, sometimes it is necessary to make a landing on a field or a country airstrip. To that end the product provides three hundred airstrips and airfields in France, the neighbouring countries of Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg and parts of the surrounding areas such as Southern England.

The airfields and landing strips do not show in the standard airport directory, they are located under the 'Scenery from 6.0 and before' menu.

The following planes are included, the Pilatus PC 6 Porter, the Berijev Be-12 'Tchaika', the DeHavilland DHC 6-300, The C-130 Hercules KLU, and the Lockheed P-3 Orion. These come with a selection of preset flights and adventures that are compatible with , another flight simulator add-on product that lets the player hear the Air Traffic Control commands.

In addition to the above the package includes the following adventures:

  • EGDR - LFGO : RAF Culdrose(UK) to Pon Sur Yonne(France)in a C-130 Hercules
  • LFQV - LFHW : Charleville Meziers to Belleville Villie Morgon in a C-130 Hercules
  • EGTD - LFIH : Exeter(UK) to Chalais(France) a PC 6 Porter
  • LFMQ - LFKA : Le Castellet to Albertville in a PC3 Orion
  • LFDS - LFHN : Sarlat Domme to Bellegarde Vouvray in a PC 6 Porter
  • LFKZ - EGKA : St Claude(France) to Shoreham(UK) in a PC 6 Porter
  • LFNT - LFMN : Avignon Pujaut to Nice in a PC3 Orion
  • LFGH - LFGZ : Cosne Sur Loire to Nuits St Georges in a C-130 Hercules
  • LFCN - EGMD : Nogaro(France) to Lydd(UK) in a Cessna 182
  • LFIB - LFKE : Belves St Pardoux to St Jean En Royan in a C-130 Hercules

Note: The install process replaces Microsoft Flight Simulator 98's 'Europe 1' and 'Europe 2' texture files which makes it incompatible with some other products that also use/replace these files.

Very detailed product, some assembly required.

The Good
The documentation that comes with the game is excellent. It clearly explains how to change the settings of the flight simulator to achieve maximum realism.

The ancillary documentation, e.g. the charts of the airspace over France, are also excellent and could be used when flying.

The planes look good and when I compared them to real-life pictures they seemed to be quite accurate, more importantly they flew without a hitch.

Other nice features include low altitude waypoint files that trigger a message to the pilot when they are within two nautical miles, refuelling points at some of the smaller airfields and in some places opening hangar doors.

The Bad
I must say up front that I had problems with the installation of this package. While the install ran smoothly, to get the new airfields to show in the simulator's scenery library I had to do some manual editing. Not something I am familiar with doing and this may have led to some of the other problems reported below although I don't think this is really what happened.

Some, but not all, of the new airfields gave me problems. On some the airstrip floated well above the ground. On others the grass strip was at ground level but it moved when the cameras point of view moved.

Though the aircraft models looked OK from the outside I was surprised that the pilot's control panels were, in all but one case, made up. This is not a problem for me because I am not a 'serious' flight simmer, e-pilot, or whatever the current term is. However I must confess I felt a little let down.

The documentation on the CD assumes that the player/pilot has quite detailed knowledge thus making the acquisition of that knowledge essential if the product is to be used. For example how's this for a quote "5 - We can now emulate the RMI ? We originally created the file for a commercial pilot friend of mine who needed to practice. Each VOR has an associated NDB frequency. Just tune the OBS and use the ADF, that's all there is to it. See the section on RMI in the manual for further information on how to use this function."
So if you don't know that VOR stands for VHF Omnidirectinal Range - a short-range air navigation aid, RMI means Radio Magnetic Indicator, NBD is a Non Directional Beacon, and how to use these devices you're going to miss out on a sizeable chunk of the products content.

Finally, the airstrips that this package provides are nearly all in France. Great if you want to fly there from surrounding countries but not what I was expecting.

The Bottom Line
There are good things in this package but you have to know what you are doing in order to get the most out of it., plus you have to really, really want to fly over France.
