Description official description

County Fair is a shooting gallery game, in the tradition of amusement parks everywhere. Similar to Carnival, the player's gun can be recklessly waved left and right along the bottom of the screen; the objective: rack up as many points as you can by picking off the moving targets, until your bullets run out. Precision is a must, especially when aiming for the well-shielded trees at the back. If you take too long to get 'em all, the lesser targets will start respawning, so speed also counts.

Occasionally special targets will appear, which can either give you extra bullets, or take them away. Not all your targets are sitting ducks: surprisingly, the ducks are the most proactive - these beaked bullies will attempt to break formation and swoop down to gobble up your ammo(!). If you manage to clear the screen, you'll face off against the fabled end-of-round bonus duck, before proceeding to the next (and faster) level.

Fair version of the arcade classic

The Good
Always been a fan of Carnival, & have played a few versions over the years on many systems. Although not exactly the same, this is a carnival game. Nice large colourful sprites & good sounds get you into the game as you try to shoot down all the targets in the shooting gallery, which you have to do with ever decreasing ammo & a time limit. As well as the usual objects, you have to shoot coloured trees at the top of the screen, which seem to have replaced the spinning wheel with pipes in the normal versions.

The controls allow you to use a joystick, which makes the game easy to use. There is also a hi score available to see what you need to beat.

The Bad
There is only one skill level, though in fairness it is not to hard, & even I managed to get through the first round. What is irritating is the frequency in which the ducks swoop down to nick your bullets, & seems to be more than the normal versions. Also, the game loses interest after a while.

The Bottom Line
The Apple seemed to have a good selection of arcade clones made for it, which in general are well made & playable. Although this is a fairly early Apple conversion, it is a nice clear version of Carnival, & is certainly playable for a filler if you have a spare 10 minutes.
