Roundabout
Description
Roundabout is a racing game played from an almost top-down view and set in an open world environment. The protagonist is the female limousine driver Georgio Manos. She gets to pick up passengers to perform missions, but there is a catch. Inspired by the mechanics of the GBA game Kuru Kuru Kururin, the limousine constantly revolves with a constant speed. The car can be steered in any direction, but the spinning limousine can only take a few hits before it explodes. The game was also inspired by elements of the Crazy Taxi and Grand Theft Auto series. The environment can be explored freely, but several areas, usually connected through bridges, only become accessible after completing a number of missions. To navigate the environment the spinning movement needs to be used strategically to pass narrow sections, but it can just as well be used to kill pedestrians.
The game is set in 1977 and uses a '70s b-movie style. Whenever a customer enters the limousine the mission is introduced through a live-action cut-scene with a cast that consists almost entirely of developers of large and indie game studios. Missions usually require Georgio to reach a destination on another part of the map, but each mission consists of multiple optional objectives and they can be replayed to complete all of them. Examples of optional objectives are not having the car explode, a time limit, collecting a number of items etc. Various actions and missions are rewarded with cash, also by building up combos by not hitting anything and collecting tokens, stringing together actions quickly in succession before the window of opportunity is gone.
Next to the main missions there is a large number of challenges such as bouncing a ball on top of the car, avoiding falling cars, a destruction derby etc. Once unlocked these can be replayed right away from the main menu as well. Cash is used to buy hats for the limousine as well as various paint jobs. Optionally cash stashes can be located in the environment and a large amount of horn types are hidden. The car can be repaired and customized at special buildings that can be tracked through a mini-map. Gradually various power-ups for the car are unlocked and only one can be equipped at all times. These include the ability to slow down time, reversing the spinning direction, traveling over water, shooting traffic cones etc. The limousine is able to boost and soon learns to jump as well. From then on it is possible to jump on top of buildings and roundabouts to avoid traffic or to collect another type of collectible. Cash can be spent on buying properties and by revisiting them after a while additional cash can be collected. Various extras (modifiers) can be selected from the main menu, such as a big head mode or permadeath.
