Description

Neon Chrome is a top-down cyberpunk shooter with roguelike elements. It takes place in Neon Chrome, an arcology (large tower) built by Neon Corp where millions of people live. The player takes control of one of the inhabitants flagged for removal. He connects to one of thousands of assets through an immersion chair to bring down the system, with a new asset for every session, from a selection of three. Each asset has a different class, such as Assassin, Cyber Psycho or Hacker, with different abilities, variations in statistics, and two types of starting weapons that are often randomized.

A session consists of 30 levels played in succession, with randomized office environments, until the Overseer is defeated in the final level. Along the way there are also smaller bosses to defeat. The game has permadeath, so as soon as the character dies a new set of levels need to be replayed from the start with a different asset. The game takes place in a dark environment with bright neon elements. The character can be moved using the twin stick principle, taking out enemies, collecting loot and interacting with elements in the environment. There are locked doors, items that can only be used by a specific role, explosive elements, time pressure and so on. There are two types of weapons with a limited amount of ammo and a melee attack.

By progressing through levels credits can be gathered that can be spent on different game elements. First there are five large statistics that can be upgraded multiple times and last permanently over the sessions: damage, energy, health, luck and slots. Then there are abilities, enhancements and weapons that are unlocked over time. Once unlocked, the currency can be spent on them for a specific setup that only lasts for the next run. At CyberHance Express stations cybernetics can be installed for the available slots while progressing through the missions, with additional enhancements. During missions weapons can be exchanged as they are found in the environment or left behind by enemies. The Overseer and the general challenge level is upgraded along with the player's progress.

The game can be played locally with up to four players in a cooperative mode.
