Description

Sudoku is a DVD game for one to four players that is based on the classic puzzle game.

Using the DVD remote the Player(s) select either an easy, medium or hard puzzle and a response time of either ten, twenty or thirty seconds before then the game begins. Making Sudoku into a multiplayer game means introducing some means of scoring. The ides here is that the game shows a Sudoku puzzle and highlights a cell, the player holding the DVD remote then shouts out the answer before within the pre-agreed time limit. When the timer expires the game reveals the answer, if they are correct the nominated score keeper writes their score down on the score pad so if the player correctly deduced that the answer was 'four' they would score four points.

Some cells are designated double or triple cells and the player scores two or three times the value of the number in that cell, there's also an 'All Play' cell where anyone can answer and the first correct answer scores ten extra points.

When the game is complete the scorekeeper adds up the scores and announces the winner.

Does't work for me, best avoided

The Good
This is an OK game. There's music in the background that's not too intrusive, the voice overs are clear and the game does what it says it will do

The Bad
The main problem for me is the whole concept. I like Sudoku. I can spend ages trying to solve one once I get into it. Here the player(s) have thirty seconds at most to come up with an answer which indicates how hard the hardest puzzles are.

Putting a time limit on the response is probably intended to inject a bit of pace and make the game competitive but for me it makes the whole thing feel a bit forced. I get the same feeling from the in-game music, I mean it's OK but does anyone want a mediocre, thumping soundtrack when they are trying to solve a Sudoku puzzle - I certainly don't.

Finally I was disappointed to find that the game had a manual scoring system, if you must do that then you should at least supply the pen. There's so little interaction with this game that it's really very, very boring

The Bottom Line
It's described as 'engaging and highly addictive' and even comes with a spoof warning to that effect. I found it boring and I cannot imagine any group of friends sitting through an entire session playing this thing
