One has to wonder when this genre will finally kick its last power kick and sail off into tomorrow. It is pretty unfathomable that companies keep porting fighting games, which belong in the arcade, to the PC, hoping that fans of the arcade version will run out and buy these poor translations to play at home. The question is ... why would people buy them? Historically, the PC environment is not well-suited to this type of game. Small screens, keyboards and mice just can't replicate the arcade atmosphere very well. Unless you have some quality game pads and a 21" monitor, you'll just be wasting time and money with something like Iron Man (well, you would be then, too). But what is most baffling about this particular game is its lack of decent multiplayer support. The only multiplayer option is a tandem play setting for the regular levels ... no head-to-head mode whatsoever. Why even look at a game like this unless you can duke it out with your friend? Isn't that the point?

A good rental, Iron Man will not get a medal for it's mettle, but it's a pretty heroic effort nonetheless.

For those players who associate punch and kick fests with gaming of past (and want something a bit more cutting edge), a title like Tobal No.1 is a far better choice. But players who really miss the days of Contra and Final Fight, or who love Iron Man or X-O Manowar, have reason enough to check out this game.

In short, Heavy Metal feels as though it was hastily thrown together. The result is a game that could have easily used another six months of development. People looking for a good action scroller should look elsewhere. Comic book and side-scroller fans could better spend their time reading a good comic book or going back to their SNES or Sega Genesis.

Even as a retro romp, Iron Man / X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal fails miserably. It's more likely to give you a cardiac arrest when you realise you've just spent ÂŁ45 on the effer!

Even as a retro romp, Iron Man X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal fails miserably. Itâs more likely to give you cardiac arrest when you realise youâve just spent ÂŁ45 on the effer! Thereâs already plenty of pantwettingly good platformers out on the PlayStation, namely Pandemonium and Crash Bandicoot. Stay well away from this tosh!

Overall there isn't much reason to recommend this game. If you find it on sale it might be worth a try, but other than that don't bother.

I like the idea of Iron Man/X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal better than the reality of playing it. This is bad. Really bad and pales in comparison to the 16-bit greats and even the middling licensed titles of the time. Stay far away.

So you walk (running is a double-tap pain in the ass) left or right, shoot dumb spider aliens, and occasionally fight bosses. It's incredibly mind-numbing, but not in a fun, Valium-kind of way. It's just boring. The control is as sluggish as it gets, and the graphics, while decent enough for a 2D side-scroller, just aren't up to 32-bit standards. In short, Iron Man/X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal (whew!) is no fun, no matter how long it takes you to say the name.

That last comment sums up Iron Man/X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal, boring. Its formula has been repeated throughout the history of console gaming and it's tired, old, and unoriginal. The action is uninspired, the visuals are dark, problematic and grainy, and the concept is dull. Only if you are a diehard fan of Iron Man or comic books would you even think about checking this game out. Even if you are one of these people, you're bound to be extremely disappointed.

Even if you've gone on record saying that you've never played a videogame before, you've probably still played a game exactly like Heavy Metal. The concept and execution of this title is so ridiculously simple and derivative it's almost an insult to Saturn owners. People packed up their SNES and Genesis for games like this? I don't think so.

The best part of the game is the ability to fly and hover. That works pretty well, but the basic gameplay is redundant. The graphics aren't anything to write home about either, with the objects being blurry and pixilated. The levels are unoriginal and boring. Hey look - there's an elevator stage. Gee I've only seen that in every fighting game I've ever played! And at the end of each stage, you are awarded one ridiculously long password. I'd pass on this one.

It seems that no thought whatsoever has gone into the game; no thought on how to make it worthy buying. In fact, the only thing they've thought about is bashing out the cheapest game possible at the highest price. A complete rip-off, an appalling game, and a big black mark next to Acclaim's name. Avoid it with all your might, and together we shall destroy all who dare insult us by releasing CRAP!

A Decent Side-Scrolling Platformer
The Good
Heavy Metal Wars is an early game in the lifespan of the PlayStation 1. As superhero games go, it's not as groundbreaking as, say, Spider-Man. However, it is better than the Fantastic Four and Incredible Hulk games that were released on the system.
Up to two players can play at once, and the basic gameplay mechanics are familiar. Both Iron Man and X-O Manowar walk, run, jump, duck, punch, shoot (upgradable) unlimited laser beam projectiles, fire a big (limited ammo) chest laser projectile, and fire your lasers at certain background objects or enemies.
Both superheroes can also fly/hover (which depletes an energy bar). Killed enemies drop the usual set of icons and powerups.
It's pretty easy to pick up the game's mechanics and the game features some nice (early) 32-bit era graphics and some nice "to the extreme" 1990s rock music.
Basically, the game is trying to be like, say, "Turtles in Time", but with Marvel Comics characters. I found Heavy Metal to be a fun, but not terribly innovative, game to play.
The Bad
Heavy Metal Wars has a story, but it's poorly developed. You are given quite a lot of drab (even hard to read) text to read before levels. These intermission sequences could have been better done, especially when dealing with locations or supervillains from the comics.
Frankly, I generally ignored the text and it doesn't make the game unplayable. It does make it difficult for the game to stand out or even connect with comic book fans.
The Bottom Line
Heavy Metal Wars is a fun game, but it doesn't bring anything new to the 2D platforming genre. Iron Man and X-O Manowar look good and are fairly responsive, playable characters. But the PlayStation hardware ain't being taxed, and you can replace these comic book stars with just about any 2D action hero from the 1990s. It's a good, solid platformer that won't tax your brain.
