1UP (Nov 01, 2009)
Other than these limitations, though, combat's freer and more visceral than any tactics game I've ever played. Enemies reserve action points for opportunity shots, so you often move under fire, adding to the thrill. Too bad the enemies don't think very well -- as with most tactical games, Valkyria Chronicles relies on numerical advantage and preexisting conditions to provide the challenge, as the enemy A.I.'s about as clever as a soup sandwich. But, honestly, this is so innovative and so polished a game that if you pass it up, the real moron is you.
Game Shark (Dec 23, 2008)
I’m sure many of you saw the trailer for Valkyria Chronicles during this year’s E3, and thought “Well it looks pretty, but I bet it’ll suck or be gimmicky.” I thought that very thing; I even declined a chance to play it behind closed doors with Sega to squeeze in some more time elsewhere. After giving the game a shot, though, I’m here to tell you not only does the game look gorgeous, but it’s fun, challenging, one of the most innovative strategy role-playing titles in years, and definitely the top RPG on the PS3.
Thunderbolt Games (Dec 03, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is a long, sweeping epic of a game that every PS3 owner should play. Its rich story, unique premise, and reimagined sense of strategic role-playing shouldn’t be missed. Released amongst a slew of gaming giants - Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Left 4 Dead, LittleBigPlanet, etc - it is most certainly the underdog this year. However, for those seeking something different, something new - it’s a battle worth joining. It’s a testament to a game’s quality when the only major complaint is a few detriments to the story; most games don’t even have a story good enough to complain about ruining in the first place. The rich atmosphere, amazing art, and inventive gameplay really must be experienced.
Gaming Age (Dec 02, 2008)
We've been through years and years of Final Fantasy Tactics lookalikes and play-alikes, many of which I've enjoyed and will continue to enjoy. Valkyria Chronicles, though, is truly a much needed step forward for the genre. It proves that SRPGs can look great and can even further push the envelope of human tactics in a video game. Hands down, this is the best RPGs on the PS3, one of the best of the entire genre, and one of the best games this generation.
JustPressPlay (Feb 23, 2009)
I was once skeptical, but I was quickly won over. With its captivating characters, engaging plot and addicting battle system I do not regret plunking my hard earned money down on Valkyria Chronicles. Granted this game came out late last year, but a good RPG is a good game forever. So run over to your local game store and buy a copy of Valkyria Chronicles now. If you don’t get it your inner gamer will hate you for it.
Absolute Games ( (Mar 20, 2009)
RPGFan (Dec 28, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles shatters all strategy RPG conventions. Taking the best from the genre in terms of tactical warfare and combining it with a brilliant, fast-paced first-person element makes every battle seem fresh, and the challenge fierce. While I "officially" finished the game at about thirty hours, my PS3 did not account for all of the times I died and had to reload the sometimes hour-long battles. There's not much more I can say other than this: if you're looking for a system-seller, this is it. Valkyria Chronicles is the best game exclusive to the Playstation 3, and it is going to take a game that is truly remarkable and an all-time great to replace that status in my mind.
Playstation Universe (Nov 24, 2008)
PlayStation 3 owners have been crying, scrambling, petitioning, yelling, moaning and whining for great roleplaying games on their platform of choice – now they have a defining title within that genre. Valkyria Chronicles offers 25-30 hours of gameplay that features tremendous amounts of replayability. Any PS3 owner that loves RPGs and is expecting developers to continue to offer these exclusive titles on the console should go out and purchase Valkyria Chronicles.
Worth Playing (Nov 22, 2008)
There's something about a Sega game that makes it "Sega," and Valkyria Chronicles has that unmistakable touch to it that the Shining Force titles on the Genesis and Dragon Force for the Saturn have had. It's one of the best games that I've played for the current generation, and strategy-minded JRPG fanatics might want to book a trip to Gallia for a unique experience on the PS3. Challenging, frustrating, but every bit as rewarding, Valkyria Chronicles is proof that Sega can create something new while wrapping it within the familiar feel of a classic.
Gamer 2.0 (Nov 17, 2008)
Sega’s done an admiral job in updating the strategy RPG clichés to better fit the gameplay expectations brought on by the games of this generation so far for Valkyria Chronicles. A lot of great changes have been made to the tedious strategy RPG formula that should be expected from this genre going forward, so we hope that this game inspires a few other developers to step up and meet the challenge they’ve set. If you’ve gotten bored by strategy RPGs over the years but want to get back into one of them, this game’s the perfect choice for those that need something new to play this holiday season. There’s a beefy main campaign to keep you busy for many hours to come and is a game that deserves to sell.
GameZone (Nov 10, 2008)
It’s games like Valkyria Chronicles that make me glad I’m a game reviewer. This is a game that weaves a deeply moving and powerful story while adding an action-packed strategy twist to the genre. In other words, this is a PlayStation 3 game destined to become a console favorite.
GameTrailers (Nov, 2008)
If you're looking for an RPG that strays off the beaten path, go buy Valkyria Chronicles. From the gameplay to the visuals, it's one of a kind. It has appeal for both strategy heads and role-players who find high fantasy to be low on their interest scale.
IGN Australia (Oct 29, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is a truly magnificent outing for SEGA. It dares to be different, it scoffs at genre conventions and finds its own path, and in doing so succeeds brilliantly as both a deep strategy experience and a wonderfully story-driven RPG. Yet its quirkiness -- in its visual style, in its thematic concerns and in its gameplay mechanics -- won’t find universal appeal. This isn’t a game for everyone, but those who fall for its charms will treasure it with a devotion bordering on obsession.
RPG Site (Nov 04, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is truly a genre defining, revolutionary new take on the RPG genre. Even viewed as a strategy RPG, it’s excitingly and stunningly fresh, and manages to stand out from the crowd not only by being different but by having an interesting story and beautiful graphics. It might be different, and it might not follow the strict RPG rules to the letter – but give it a try. You might well find the change is long overdue.
Legendra (Jun 01, 2008)
Ok, I know that you probably have a stack of games that you still haven't even touched (I'm looking at you, Fallout 3) and that you may have other games in that are must-buys for you. But I beg you not to overlook Valkyria Chronicles if you happen to be an RPG fan. It looks great and the battle system adds a refreshing feel to a somewhat tired genre (at least the genre will feel tired after you try the game). There are a few flaws with the game, like a lot of cutscenes, Godzillaesque voiceacting (using the English track), and a lack of online play (it could have been fun), so I can't give it a perfect, but it's still close with a 9 out of 10.
Blend Games (Dec 01, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is a refreshing, one-of-a-kind game with a few nitpicky problems. It is, by far, the best Tactical RPG that has been released this generation of consoles, and I'd go so far as to say the past two generations. Not since Final Fantasy Tactics have I been so enthralled and in love with a TRPG that I actually think about it and plan my strategies when I'm not playing it. The difficulty can be a little spotty at times, but the game is never unfair. From an RPG snob like myself, I have absolutely no problem recommending Valkyria Chronicles to anybody who is a fan of the genre, or to anybody who wants to learn what it means to love a game.
RPGamer (Jul 05, 2009)
Valkyria Chronicles is an outstanding game with an original combat system and a brilliant presentation. The unique combat is not without its flaws, but considering that it is a first take on this new style of gameplay, it's difficult to complain too much. The story, while not the most unique or compelling, is told in a way that makes it enjoyable. The characters are charming, even the lowly ones with no direct bearing on the story. All in all, Valkyria Chronicles is thoroughly enjoyable and a great starting point for what hopefully will become a new series. Now, tactical RPG fans just need to do their part and purchase this game to help us ensure that more unique titles like this get made.
UOL Jogos (Jan 08, 2009)
Gamervision (Nov, 2008)
The PS3 may not have a lot of exclusives, especially in this genre, but Valkyria Chronicles is an absolute gem that owners of the system are lucky to have. Even in this crowded holiday season of triple-A titles, this one somehow snuck in and stole my heart, and I found myself putting other games on the back burner to spend more time with Valkyria Chronicles. There are times when it can be downright frustrating—once in a while, you’ll want to throw your controller through a TV—but overall, this game is so impressive that you’ll keep going back for more. There’s a decent amount of replay value, and with New Game Plus you can restart with your stats intact and try creating a new challenge for yourself. I didn’t expect to love this game as much as I did, but it’s earned a permanent place in my collection.
90 (Nov 07, 2008)
IGN (Oct 29, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is a game that all PS3 owners should at least try out, especially considering its unique blend of genre forms. With such a robust collection of extras to back up an already impressive mission roster and gripping story, Valkyria Chronicles comes highly recommended. I strongly encourage you to try it out and see the beauty of Gallia and its people.
GameSpy (Nov 04, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is a powerful reason for role-playing gamers to spend the next few weeks on the PlayStation 3. Having seen the game in action some time ago, we expected something visually stunning, but we were impressed by the strength of the game's storyline and gameplay. It's easily one of the best looking games we've played this year, but thankfully there's plenty of strategic depth and engrossing gameplay to back it up.
DarkZero (Jan 10, 2009)
Valkyria Chronicles is a game that deserves to be played by everyone. It’s so innovative, fresh and blends different features of other genres so well that you’d think Sega WOW had already done this before. I think a quote from Bruce Almighty tells a lot about this game, “B-E-A-UTIFUL” is what should be slapped all over it. It’s Sega’s best game since… well, the Dreamcast era.
ZTGameDomain (Nov, 2008)
Unconventional and beautiful, Valkyria Chronicles delivers a game that is both deep and whimsical. A well-balanced tactical and story-driven title, it may well seem like a game for the open-minded though it is sure to ensnare any that pick it up as the diverse genres and gameplay styles combine to form a rewarding whole.
GameFocus (Nov 28, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is one of the best looking games because of its unique water color art design gives the game a great look and feel. One of the few Playstation 3 only Role Playing titles that is actually worth owning and replaying, so run out and pick up this game today.
89 (Oct 30, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is a excellent game, the way that the story and action fuse together is very impressive, as is the overall presentation. It looks fantastic, plays well and tells a wonderful story of one countries fight for survival against the odds. This is one game I would highly recommend for any PS3 owner looking for something different.
Extreme Gamer (Nov 21, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles does an outstanding job making the most out their ambitious title. The real-time/turn-based strategy action in Valkyria has just the right amount of depth to make it enjoyable for all levels of gamers. The more you play Valkyria the more you will love it. Beyond the main story their a few things to keep you occupied along side the ability to take advantage of the new game+ feature and do it all over again.
Gaming Target (Nov 19, 2008)
This is the game that Operation Darkness for the Xbox 360 should have been. With its combination of an enthralling story, interesting blend of gameplay, beautiful graphics, and a gripping soundtrack Valkyria Chronicles is right up there with Final Fantasy Tactics as one of the best SRPGs to ever be released. Although it can be hard to stomach the slow pace of the game in between battle at times, the game is still a must play where almost anyone can find something that they’ll like and is a great addition to the PS3 library. PS3 owners be glad, you just received this generation's best Japanese role playing game to date.
This is one of those games where you just don't want it to end and just hoping there is a sequel with the cast of characters making a repeat appearance. Valkyria Chronicles is a prime example of how an rpg should be made from a great story with good music and gameplay. This is a total overall satisfying experience for gamers. I can clearly say with a good conscious that Valkyria Chronicles is 2008 rpg game of the year. A must buy for all Playstation 3 rpg gamers.
GameNorth (Jan 27, 2009)
Valkyria Chronicles is a breath of fresh air in a stagnating genre. It’s intelligent, charming, and most importantly, different from anything that came before it. With hours of gameplay found within the game’s rich campaign mode, secret story chapters and skirmish battles, it’s hard not to recommend this game to any RPG fan. The story, characters and visual design are very charming, and while the game may fall victim to a few of the genre’s cliches, it separates itself from the pack with little effort.
Gameswelt (Nov 17, 2008)
PSX Extreme (Feb 07, 2009)
Valkyria Chronicles is indeed one of the best games of 2008, and certainly the best strategy/RPG of this generation. Some may argue that it can be too easy to power-level through the Skirmishes, and others will lambaste the lacking AI or get all bent out of shape concerning the hidden enemies that don’t show up on your map. Then there's another group who will become very annoyed when Welkin bites the dust in an hour-long battle, causing you to replay the whole thing. That’s all well and good, and there are legitimate complaints out there, but for the most part, this is one title you really shouldn’t miss. At the very least, if it’s not your cup of tea, give it a rent…you might be surprised at the result. Now, Sega, how’s about a sequel?
As engaging as the gameplay is, it produces some targeting irregularities, such as a tank missing another tank at point blank range. In these instances, your strategic planning falls victim to chance. This can lead to frustration, but frequent mid-battle saves can correct any situation deemed unfair. Valkyria Chronicles is a sleeper hit, and a must for any strategy nut.
87 (Jan 20, 2011)
86 (Nov 15, 2008)
These days gamers already complain when there's no co-op present in a game of if it doesn't have online multiplayer but Valkyria Chronicles gives more than enough fun with the offline single player campaign! This game fills more than the empty void that was present with the PS3. SEGA arrives with one hell of an RPG that certainly should be on your wanted list!
86 (Nov 06, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles gets so much right it's a real shame that the few faltering steps it does make are all linked to the core gameplay. Visually and aurally it's a real tour de force, the plot pretty much stays the right side of the crazy line and on the whole combat feels fresh and well designed. There are a few hiccups and they do take the gloss off things more than the rest of the game deserves, but they shouldn't be enough to put you off. Tactical RPG fans should love this while the rest of you aren't going to find a better reason to give the genre a go anytime soon.
85 (Nov 07, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is both impressive and strikingly flawed. Many of its problems are growing pains, the result of trying to tackle a beefy, unseen combat engine with overly simplistic rules. The game ends up being infuriating and exciting, coming across as both polished and not quite done. Despite its shortcomings, it still shines. You won’t find anything else like it on the PlayStation 3, and I doubt you will for some time to come. Strategy fans, check this one out.
GameSpot (Nov 25, 2008)
But in a game as smart and delightful as Valkyria Chronicles, it's easy to look past these issues and take comfort in its fun and intelligent take on a genre that has plenty of room to grow. Yet while it is a fantastic new step forward for strategy RPGs, it's a lovely and enjoyable game in its own right, and if you own a PlayStation 3, you should also own a copy of Valkyria Chronicles.
Valkyria Chronicles succeeds in bringing genres together and provides a memorable experience that not only proves that strategy can be done on consoles, but brings something completely new and great to the table.
Destructoid (Nov 18, 2008)
As frustrating as the battles can be, time and time again I enjoy playing through every little bit of them. Valkyria Chronicles is a visual feast. It maintains a high level of difficulty in a new and rather innovative renewal of the tactical genre that provides enough of a challenge to entice fans of the genre, but is not so stuck in its ways as to keep normally averse gamers away. This is one title all you PS3 owners need to pick up.
Gameplayer (Oct 24, 2008)
This is a niche product. It has an anime look, and a novel-like pace. Yet the biggest difference from your run-of-the-mill WWII shooter is that you have to think very carefully about what you are doing. The combat system is straightforward, yet merciless. You will make mistakes, and you will be forced to learn from them. But if you're into this sort of thing, you will get your rocks off — and that's what matters.
Meristation (Oct 30, 2008)
Console Monster (Nov 01, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is a wonderfully presented game which is easily accessible to all. It's not without its quirks, but these can be overlooked simply because the game is so enjoyable to play and watch. For those looking for an easy, fun entry into this genre, Valkyria Chronicles is definitely worth a look.
Game Arena (Nov 06, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is a product suitable for anime fans, war fans and a hybrid of the two. The learning curve ensures that anyone new to tactical gaming will get a solid grasp of the basics, and the storybook approach really is just like an interactive anime. The story is great, the teen girl soldiers are hilarious, and it’s definitely worthy of a look for those wanting to commit to a lengthy and challenging romp in a war-torn anime world.
There are some things you never knew you wanted in a strategy game. The third-person view does wonders to get you invested in every decision, and it’s great to have a worthwhile story. The gorgeous presentation and versatile combat make Valkyria Chronicles one of the best surprises of the year. It may not have been on your radar before, but you definitely shouldn’t let it pass you by.
Cheat Code Central (Nov, 2008)
SEGA has delivered a standout title, one that pushes past its strict genre boundaries and deserves to be played by not only fans of tactical RPGs, but also those that have never touched the genre. Turn-based strategy doesn't get much better than this. PS3 owners who pickup this title won't be disappointed.
Game Revolution (Dec 19, 2008)
But these hiccupy flaws stand in stark contrast to the rest of the game’s general excellence. Even beginners will quickly learn and compensate for these minor, cropping weirdnesses, and others still will not happen to encounter (or at least notice) them. The vast-majority rest of the time, Valkyria Chronicles offers a unique take on RPG-strategy, a truly involving story, endearing characters, and a chance to reflect upon—or wonderfully, hopelessly anachronize— whatever sense of real-world history you may still have in your head.
GamingXP (Nov 25, 2008)
Gamestyle (Dec 19, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is a game that hopefully will gain popularity in the same way the likes of Beyond Good and Evil did, with good words being spread. It’s a shame that this could be destined for obscurity because it’s certainly one of the most unique games this year and a series we wouldn’t mind seeing continue.
80 (Dec 08, 2008)
If you want a focused single player game with a heavy reliance on strategy that blends genres in a unique way, you need to play Chronicles. If you have a hankering for something more expansive in terms of modes and features, then perhaps you might want to look elsewhere but, be warned, you are missing out on something truly special.
80 (UK) (Oct 24, 2008)
Make no mistake, Valkyria Chronicles is a really, really, really good tactical RPG, and fans of the genre should pick it up without delay, but beneath the inviting exterior and thoughtfully designed battle system lies a game with a few too many clunky inconsistencies which directly impact the strategic heart of the experience.
G4 TV: X-Play (Nov 19, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles is an experience with a fantastic animated visual look. Like a Miyazaki movie, there is an element of fairy tale to the fantastic storybook-like presentation. Each chapter is replete with four or five cutscenes with a heavy emphasis on story. What it comes down to in the end is your tolerance for extreme punishment for failure and whether or not the atmosphere and plot can drive you through the rough patches. There is a lot to like about what the development team reinvented in this stylish nod to old school game mechanics. When Valkyria Chronicles is on its game, there’s nothing else like it on the market.
NZGamer (Nov 19, 2008)
On the whole, although Valkyria Chronicles is an excellent game and it gets better the more attention you pay and the deeper you go. Hitoshi Sakimoto’s soundtrack is, of course brilliant. And although the voice acting is above average the sound effects could have been more varied and a little better quality. The graphics, as I’ve already said, are truly fabulous and although I never felt as though I was in an actual war, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
GameDaily (Nov 21, 2008)
Valkyria Chronicles boasts a superbly designed anime-style world set in an alternate pre-WWII era. This strategy game is unlike anything else out there, especially for the PS3, due to its comical yet charming aesthetic and it's unique take on the genre. While it is a military tactics game, it dares to branch out into action and role-playing territories. Yet, it's so unprecedented that this may be it's greatest downfall; in a sea of familiarity, will gamers be willing to take a risk on an unknown property? Here's what we know: it looks great, it sounds great and it plays great, and it won't feel like something you've played before. Try it.

Does presentation and innovative battle systems a good game make? In Valkyria Chronicles, the answer is yes. Despite all of my complaints, I had a really good time with the game, and it’s well worth the thirty dollars it quickly dropped to. However, I have trouble eating a cookie when I know it could do with a little bit more chocolate chips and they’re sitting in an unopened bag nearby while the cook is getting drunk upstairs. Valkyria Chronicles could’ve been a masterpiece. As it is, it’s an unforgettable exclusive for the PS3. Maybe that’s good enough, but I’m holding out for that extra chip.
