Here's one title that no fighting-game fan should be without this fall. Getting beaten up after school is fun for a change. ... Not only is Rival Schools a very solid fighting game, but the extras that round out the package also make it a top offering. Rival Schools should be on any fighting gamer's "must-have" list.
PlayStationAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault) (Jan 13, 1999)
Rival Schools is an excellent game for both neophytes and experienced fighters alike. The twisted characters, bizarre special moves, great visuals and flawless control make it a worthy successor to Capcom’s Street Fighter legacy. Furthermore, the fact that hidden players can be unlocked and many odd secrets are contained within (school nurse Kyoto giving the player a massage, for instance), give it substantial replay value. It has fast-paced fighting, an easy learning curve and all of the great gameplay that fans have come to expect from Capcom’s fighting game developers. Both hard-core fans and novices to the genre should give it a try.

Not only does every frame promise a mouth-watering slap in the face but the game oozes sub-games, league fights, secret menus, training modes and such a faithful conversion of the arcade game that it comes on a separate CD! Some of the impact may have been lost during the conversion of the epic Japanese version that we awarded a staggering 96% to, but this is still textbook fighting! Each one of these games adds to the already impressive playablility of Rivals Schools. Ignoring the ugly fighters this game delivers in just about all the right places and leaves your eyes stinging.

Rival Schools is a pretty slick fighting game that throws a boatload of options and special moves at you to use. The graphics serve their purpose and the sound effects are typical Capcom fare. With so many fighters...actually I should say, with so many really good fighters available for the Playstation right now, anybody releasing a new fighting title had better have something unique to set themselves apart or face getting lost in a sea of mediocrity. Well, Rival Schools definitely has that little something special with its rather original pretense and some really juicy fighting options. It should grab you attention with its initial ease of gameplay and then suck you in when you begin to discover the depth this title offers and all of those wonderfully devastating attacks that you can learn to pull off.

PlayStationThe Video Game Critic (Feb 09, 2014)
Capcom was really on top of their game when they gave us Rival Schools. I don't think I'll ever get tired of playing this one.
PlayStationMega Fun (Dec, 1998)
PlayStationIGN (Oct 26, 1998)
Rival Schools is a high production affair, with excellent looking graphics and a solid set of fighting techniques. Characters are relatively well-balanced, and the side-stepping works well to counter hasty opponents. The only thing I didn't like about Rival Schools is the too-oft used Burning Vigor Attack. Fewer projectiles, and more hands-on fighting is my style, and that's why Street Fighter Collection 2 always brings me back to bliss after a bout of Rival Schools.
PlayStationGameSpot (Aug 28, 1998)
If you're looking for an easy-to-pick-up fighting game that puts a slightly new spin on the old fighting genre, Rival Schools fits the bill pretty well.
PlayStationVideo Games (Sep, 1998)
ArcadeAll Game Guide (1998)
All in all, Rival Schools is a decent departure from the latest string of Capcom fighters, and is a solid arcade fighter. Though it's been eclipsed by Power Stone, this is still quite playable -- and funny to watch. Feel free to pop a few quarters into this one.
