Description official descriptions

World's Greatest Places Mahjong is a single player, mouse controlled tile matching game. There are two game modes, Simple mode in which the player tackles a series of 'straight', untimed, mahjong tile matching games and the main game which consists of seven locations each of which has twenty boards.

The main game starts at the Colosseum in Rome, Italy where there are twenty boards of timed mahjong variants to play through after which the player progresses through the other places in sequence. Once a board has been played it cannot be replayed. The second location is The Pyramids of Giza in Egypt and the remainder are The Great Wall of China; The Taj Mahal, Agra, India; Petra, Jordan; Machu Picchu, Peru; Stonehenge, Amesbury, United Kingdom. This is unlike the other games in the series World's Greatest Cities Mahjong and World's Greatest Temples Mahjong where all other locations become available once the first level's boards have been completed.

Each level starts with a brief information pane which contains a paragraph or two about the location along with a photo collage, a world map showing its location and a twenty step path that marks the player's progress through the level's boards. All boards are played against a background image of the location which changes from a day to a night view during play, additionally an appropriate character fades in and out from time to time - for example in the first location, the Colosseum, the character is a Roman Centurion.

The games contained consist of standard tile-matching mahjong and the following variations;* Bottom Tiles: This is played with the standard mahjong set. There are five tiles at the bottom of the screen and the player has to click on a free tile that matches any one of them. Once done both tiles disappear and the process repeats until all tiles are cleared

  • Swap Tiles. The mahjong tiles are arranged inthe game area and the player's task is to swap tiles placing two identical tiles next to each other. The process is repeated until all tiles are cleared.
  • Find a Non-Pair: Once again the tiles are arranged in the game area however, as the name implies, all tiles apart from two have a matching tile. The player's task is to identify the two odd tiles at which point that level of the board is cleared and another is revealed. The process is repeated until the board is cleared - usually around four or five cycles.
  • Find a Pair: This is basically the opposite of the 'Find a Non-Pair' game. The tiles are arranged in the game area however, as the name implies, there is only one matching pair. The player's task is to identify the two matching tiles at which point that level of the board is cleared and another is revealed.
  • Memory: This is a form of Concentration. The player is shown an arrangement of tiles which are then flipped over on the screen to lie face down. The player's task is to remove all the tiles.
  • Logical Pair: This game uses a set of picture tiles and the task is to clear all the tiles by selecting pairs where there is a logical connection between the two, for example a quill would have a logical link with a scroll on the other; an axe with logs, a key with a lock etc.
  • Four Rivers: A classic mahjong game in which the tiles are arranged in what is usually a flat, single level, pattern and the task is to identify matching pairs. The rules of the game are that the pair of tiles can be connected by at most three lines that do not pass through any other tile.

There are special tiles that help the player clear tiles faster, time bonuses when a sequence is cleared quickly within a game.
